what size 18" tires will fit an '04 S55?

If there is a chart for this sort of thing, it would be a great sticky. I searched but could not find any info about tire dimension limits.

for my 2004 S55 the stock sizes are listed as
245/45R18 front
265/40R18 rear

I'd like to know if these will fit
255/40R18 front
285/35R18 rear

I suspect the 285 may not fit on stock AMG rims, and if so I might as well upsize to 19" if I'd have to buy new rims. In that case, I'll need to start a search for 19" tires. I'm not too keen on the painted finish anyway.

My goal is to find asymmetric all-season tires that can be flipped side-to-side to help them stay quiet. This is a big pain in the *** because the S55 tires' load rating is very high which greatly limits the selection.

Simple math should tell you the issues you are facing. If not, STFF for tire size calculators posted on here.

nice try, thanks for playing. did you even read my post?

I can calculate circumference just fine, it's width and clearance that are my concern. You might notice that the two specific sizes I asked about are both *wider* that the stock sizes.

yeah it would fit...but those specs are oversize for the 18" it'll look funny like monster truck....the stock 255" and 245" is best..

I have 275" ON my S55 ... if stcck height is ok.. when lower it will rub...

hope that help..

yes, this is very helpful info, thanks. I guess I'll try to either find a site that will show me the tires on my vehicle (link, anyone??) or photoshop them in.

i haven't lowered it, and probably will not. I would like to lower it just a bit (less than an inch) to help fill the wheel wells, but I am already worried about keeping the nose off curbs when parking, so I will probably not lower it. If anything I would go up to 19s, but the stock look is more than satisfactory if the alternative is a new set of AMG wheels just for cosmetics.

thanks again for the useful response.

you can try tirerack.com...they have java preview of your car and wheel/tires ..but for aftermarket wheels only..

either way.. i wouldn't go any bigger then 265" in the rear... for stock of course..

I've seen Tire Rack's wheel preview, I'll have to see if it includes the tires in the cart (doubt it). Nope, it doesn't, but now I have a nice profile shot of a 2005 S-Class throw into photoshop.

Many people, including Luke at Tire Rack, have suggested going with 275/35R18 in the rears for "improved performance," and in going from high performance summer tires to all-season tires I can see where extra width would help make up for lost tread grip.

Also, I may have misunderstood your "monster truck" comment. Did you mean there would be even more empty space in the wheel well with the 285/35? I was thinking you meant the sidewall would be taller.
