You must be talking about the W221 generation S Classes(2007-Current), it's at the right side of the steering column for all models, nice touch as there is nothing in the middle except the Nav control mouse. Here is a picture(You can see the R,N,D, with the P at the Right):

, true that, also reminds me of those 80s and early 90s family sedan which are dogs to drive. My post above helps me reason with this point of view. It does have the power though and we all know how much you appreciate that.
