Considering a W220 S600 vs S55/65 AMG

I guess you haven't look at dragtimes.com
The S600 or S65 will CRUSH the S55. And YES that is off the line as well my friend.
My S600 does 0-60 in 4.0 flat. 3.9 with the perfect launch as it is VERY hard to control 700 ft/lbs of torque. Did I mention that either V12 has significantly MORE torque than the V8 below 2000rpm, you know the stuff that moves the car off the line. I do not know where you get your information from, but please stop by in Pittsburgh some time so I can show you what the V12 will do to your 8 from a dig
I will grant you that I am jealous of your breaks

2004 S55 (SOLD, miss it every day), 2009 GL550
I have an S55 for a daily driver.
I have only been to "Mexico" a few times (more like TJ since they were short-duration excursions) and have not been beaten by anything. That's not saying much because I've not taken the trip with another AMG, but I did manage to give a Saleen 281 a good time. I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he saw my huge sedan still right behind him (on-ramp, no passing!), i'm sure he thought his car was hot - just like I think mine is .
An S55 will definitely out-handle and out-brake the S600 but will "apparently" lose a race to 120MPH. The first two characteristics I can and do use on a daily basis. The third I will *never* use so I don't give it any weight, you may feel differently.
The S65 should be able to keep up with the S55 in handling and braking, but at much higher initial and on-going costs.
The place where the S600 will outshine the AMGs is in refinement. It's quieter inside and out, and has a bit better interior (at least compared to my 55). I pulled up to my son's t-ball game the other day and didn't have to tell my wife where I parked, she heard the car. Sorry, but that is *not* classy. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of full throttle, but would greatly appreciate a quieter car.
My next big MB sedan, if there is a next, will probably be an S600, but ONLY with the AMG brakes. And only with a warranty

I have to disagree with you here. The S65 has everything the 600 has and then some. The interior is at least as good if not better. The car is super quiet except on start up - I would say too quiet. I am actually thinking of removing the mufflers on mine. Definitely the 55 is louder from the factory. There is no way that the 600 is "more" refined than a 65. I think with the 65 you get the best of both worlds (55 and 600) and that is why you pay through the nose for it.
I'm sure the 65 is worth every penny of that 180K (?) price tag

Well, the wonderful greenies in my city have decided to bring back smog checks in November of this year... If I buy an '04 S600 and do an ECU tune as well as the other mods (to get it up to around 650hp and 750-800ft lbs tq) will my car pass smog?
