2004 S600 AMG/sports pkg vs. non-AMG
Hi all,
What's the difference between S600 AMG/sports package vs. the non-AMG?
I know the wheels and front spoiler's different, but are the brakes/seats/suspension different? I recently came across a clean S600 w/ low miles(I will need to call the Chrysler Warranty guy) to get extended warranty, but curious whether this is worth it vs. waiting for a Sports version.
Also, even though my S55 is supposed to be AMG, frankly for the S-chassis, I'm not sure how much sportier it really is, esp relative to S600 that also has the ABC already.
Thx in advance for input.
Patrick

An S600 with an "AMG" package, is merely an S600 with a bodykit, nothing else (correct me if I'm wrong). As for the ABC, as far as I know, all W220's (S430, 500, 600, S55, and 65) came with ABC. And from what I've heard others say; stick with the S55 because it feels much sportier than the S600. The S600 is a luxury car (with a lot of Hp and Tq), whereas the S55 is a luxury car turned "sports" car. The 600, (again from what I've read on this forum) feels much heavier off the line than the S55. If you want more performance out of your 55, upgrade ECU, TCU chips; brakes; suspension; etc.

2004 S55 ///AMG, 2007 E350
MB used to call this cosmetic package "AMG Sports Package" which caused a lot of confusion judging by this post and others badging their standard cars with a AMG badge.
They now call it "Sports Package" which will hopefully help avoid confusion, but we shall see. It is just a cosmetic package with a body kit and wheels. BTW, improves the looks of any standard car by a wide margin.

Coming from many years in the very dependable Volvo world (where I've had a helluva lot of turbo performance fun, too), my hair is much greyer and I am becoming a bit longer in the tooth. Nowadays, I am newly attracted to MB S600s, so have been spending some time investigating. Compared to everything else, I really, really like what I see -- and those post-2003 S600s look better all the time. I confess -- I am becoming less emotional and increasingly serious.
So, I have found a 2004 W220 S600 AMG that looks very good indeed -- all options, ~60,000 miles, no accidents, well maintained. I very much like the V12tt and the full option package. And the combined luxury and top-end performance.
But, I am now up against something I don't know about. So here's my question: given what MB Fahrer and CarboyS say (23 June of this year in this part of the forum), is the AMG on the S600 primarily an "optics" bodywork package, with nothing altered upwards in terms of mechanicals, performance or electronics? Or, is there more to the AMG package with the S600 that would make it desirable beyond the eye-candy realm?? Again, I am thinking of a 2004 here.
Any comments?
Thanks in advance / cheers / Blueleezard

I think a $5k option for larger AMG wheels, and body kit...(exhaust?)
So unless you count better performance by the 18" wheels....

Btw, after looking at many A-B comparisons, the non-AMG S600s looked a bit dated...and I think as many others have encouraged me, it was worth waiting for a good one.
