Mercedes cl 55 Amgen
Steve

I have recently bought an "03 S55 AMG. It had bad tires which howled, so I replaced them with Continental DWS Extremes, but still had a shimmy. The new tires have been balanced 6(yes, 6!)times,i at MB Cincy and Tire Discounters, with improvement, but a slight shimmy is still there. They removed some corrosion from the inside of the wheel as the last ditch attempt. I;m now thinking I need to replace the wheels. Any thoughts?

Also, this car has what I would describe as a " shudder" when I heavily accelerate. Ive had both the transmission mounts and the motor mounts replaced. Is it possible that the drive shaft needs to be balanced, or are you just going to get some of that with an AMG moving all that power? I am a newby to AMGs, but I have a CL 55 AMG that has the same feel to a degree, but not as distinctive as with the S55? Any thoughts or experience will be greatly appreciated, so if I'm going to spend more money, I do it intelligently!

I would start by replacing the transmission mount (less than $20 from autohausaz.com) and if it persists, prowl this forums past articles... i seriously doubt you have to balance the driveshaft unless the car has been wrecked.

Unhappy

Unfortunately, been there, done that! And the motor mounts too! Kinda at my witst end- only wheels and driveshaft are left and the local MB dealer tells me they are fine- yeah, right:-)

How about the flex diss, if they are shot they will produce a shimmy and an unbalanced feel at the driveshaft...there should be one at each end of the driveshaft...and they install at a particular angle to contrul the forward thrust, versus the reverse thrust.

Check all the suspension bushings (ball joints, control arms, etc). See if any of them look worn out. If this is your first Benz, welcome to vibration-ville. Good luck sorting it out! Enjoy the new ride.
