I was taking a bit of a gamble when i ordered my wheels as they were described as 35mm offset, however when they turned up they were 45mm offset and went on with just millimeters of clearence on the rear when i lowered the car. Im pretty sure the 35mm ones would have caught the rear arch.

This is incorrect. The stock rear ET for a w220 s65 is 60et. I had 18" custom drag wheels made with a 55 so I could fit a slightly wider rim, but it is close and depending on the rubber you get a tiny bit of rubbing on the inside with 285's. the inside of the stock rim is stamped 60et. The aftermarket rim companies did not believe me so I took photos and measurements.
