W221 S65 AMG oil consumption

Hi all

My 221 S65 consumes a lot of oil.

1 liter (qt) per 1500 miles. Normal driving.

I think this is a considerable amount of oil. I have replaced the rocker cover gaskets, and also the centrifugal oil separator at the front of the nearside bank.

I keep hearing that this is normal of the M275 engine. When I bought my car, I ran an oil sample which showed all normal amounts:

Seems high to me though still.....

Aha, no problem. Thanks! I have had the car a year or so now, so too long to go back to the dealer for anything. Its been outside the MB dealer network for 4 years or so, either way.

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
For info my 2006 S65 needed a quart every 1,500 miles from new until I sold it (80,000 mi.) My wife's 2007 E63 used a quart about every 3,000 miles. About the same consumption on her 2014 E63S. My 2015 S65 is getting at least 3,000 miles to a quart but I do not know the exact number because the 6 month maintenance interval comes up before I get to 3,000 incremental miles.
I think the 7 speed transmission is a contributor to the reduced oil consumption. With it the engines are at a far lower RPM than the 2006 was, the C mode is pretty good with the 7sp, it was unusable in my 2006. The 3 SL600's we had never required oil between changes. The AMG's just use some oil.
We are waiting for my wife's 2018 E63S, it has been built but not yet shipped. I am curious how that engine with the 9sp will be.

Thanks, that makes me feel slightly better.
My 215 started using oil at a lower rate than my S class and it eventually needed an engine replacement.

Why do you say that about C? I drive mine almost exclusively in C. I hate that the gearbox mode is coupled to the suspension mode. I would normally have the box in S and the suspension in C.

I drove the 2006 in S tranny mode and C suspension mode on local streets, S mode on the expressways. I tried but never used the C tranny mode because skipping first gear was unnecessary and there was no difference in fuel consumption.
With the 2015 S65 I almost never use the S suspension mode because the C mode has far more control than the C on the 2006. Also S turns off the MBC. I mostly use the C transmission mode because the car remains responsive skipping first in the 7sp. Also the engine tune and the TCU software are much better matched. In local driving in C mode the computers keep the rpm around 1,200 unless more power is demanded. With the 2015 the fuel mileage is about 3 MPG better in mixed driving. On the freeway the 2015 is getting about 19 mpg, on the same trip the 2006 got about 16.5 MPG. For reference 85mph is 1,900 rpm with the 7sp.

Ah sorry yours makes sense now. In the UK a 2006 s class is a 221!. Mines a 221 and it's the same. I drive around in c mode and it's much better than the same mode on my 215.

It behaves exactly as you say, mine wanders around 1500 rpm around town most of time. I seems to slip the torque converter more in C and the throttle response is different in sport too. Mine only has the 5 speed though.

I failed to note you are in London. Our 2006 S65 is a W220 but the engine and transmission are virtually the same, the rest of the car was much improved with the W221. I would assume the ECU tune is slightly different between the US and UK. The 2015 is a W222.

Yes indeed. The gearbox modes are much better in the 221 even with the same hardware. Unfortunately the gearbox mode is linked to the suspension mode but at least c mode is much better than c mode of old.

My mpg is pretty bad, I am getting 18/19 mpg on the motorway which is like 15/16 mpg us I think.
