Decoded VIN today and trying to figure out code 161 REPLACEMENT ENGINE WITHOUT TRANSM
I've owned this car for a little over 5 years now (2011 S63 AMG). Occasional minor problem here and there (currently my massage seats aren't working.... bummer). But today I decided to check the VIN with one of the databases.
First code above all of the options is:
161 REPLACEMENT ENGINE WITHOUT TRANSMISSION, WITH OIL
I can't find reference to this anywhere...
Can anyone help explain this to me? This is done at the factory before the car was sold and I guess given a new VIN? I don't have any record of another VIN for my car.
Thank you!
VIN: WDD2211741A370729

Out Of Control!!
Check the current engine number, the engine number associated with the VIN you provided is 000416 and I think that at some point the engine was replaced---you obviously did not by the car new and I am also assuming you did not purchase the car from an authorized MB dealer----is this a polka ***** car/??

I was just looking around but couldn't find the location on the engine. I did not buy from Mercedes... I had looked over the Carfax at the time and nothing negative was mentioned. I just find it strange to have this code as part of the VIN. I thought the codes are supposed to mention all of the options on the car... how could it mention an engine replacement unless it somehow occurred at the factory?
It is the same code located in other areas of the car. Nothing looks out of place. I've had it serviced for years at local MB Dealer and never had any mention of anything seeming strange. I'm very confused
I wrote incorrect VIN: should be WDDNG7EB4BA370729

I would visit any dealer management and ask for clarification. I would also visit law enforcement because the both of the VIN's you posted come up with the same car, that typically should not happen--you have quit a quandary on your hands.

The first "VIN" he posted is what WIS shows after entering the actual VIN that appears on the car. My 2003 S55 VIN is WDBNG74JX3A######, and in WIS it's WDB2201741A######. Same car, no VIN reworking for the law to deal with.
Can't tell you what the 161 code is, though...
