Bought a 13 S65. Insurance wants $400/yr for OEM only parts coverage. Worth it?
I've purchased this coverage on our other vehicles because I'd rather not get "kinda fits" parts if someone hits them. It just dawned on me that this car is built in such limited numbers, I doubt that there are any aftermarket body panels or other pieces available. Am I on the right track here? I don't want to be a cheapskate, but $400 is significant every year if it provides no real benefit.
Yes. The first year you need it, it’ll pay for itself. It’s the nature of insurance. It’s never worth it until it’s worth it.
maw
I agree with your thoughts, however I am wondering if the coverage is necessary if no one makes aftermarket parts for a S65. Stated another way, am I paying for a coverage that provides an illusory benefit?

Yeah that's a fair point. And I don't have a 65 car, but I have to believe there are aftermarket turbo units, chassis rubber and braking components that some insurance company will think is "good enough" that you want no part of. The OEM manufacturer will come out with pattern parts that don't meet OEM spec, but which fit the car. That's what you're insuring against. Those parts tend to be nowhere near as robust as MB OEM spec. Those parts are great profit for the OEM manufacturer (and you can see why), so you can assume they will exist, seems to me. I have this problem on both the S55 and the 500E -- insisting on OEM parts costs more money and requires constant diligence. On a '13 car, you probably have some time on that, but who knows? For $35/month, we've probably already spent too much time thinking about it.
Look through this and see the price differentials for major categories... https://www.ecstuning.com/Mercedes_B...n/Control_Arm/ The suspension components are probably the most likely culprits, but I'm sure there are others.

Does this coverage get you new OEM parts, or refurbished? That's been my experience, that shops want to use refurbished OEM parts.
"Parts" would include items not specific to the S65, but to S-class cars in general, such as lamps, fenders, glass, etc. I don't know about body panels, but I know everybody and his dog make lamps for these things, and probably glass, too. I can tell you from experience that having a shop use non-OEM glass, just because it fits and is cheaper, absolutely sucks. I spent YEARS in a Chevy with ONE DOOR WINDOW a slightly different color than the rest of the glass after the car was broken into.
