Staggered Wheels Suggestion For My '05

Hi.

Wanted to see if anyone has any wheel suggestions for my '05 S55.

I'm excited to say that it should be arriving at the end of this month.

I had an '02 for about 3 years and really liked the staggered set up.

I'm looking to put some 20s on this new bad boy...and wanted to see if

anyone out there have some pics to share (hard to buy wheels without seeing them on the vehicle).

Thanks a lot !

20 inch will not fit on your car( you might, but it will not have the correct off set). You need to over fender.
19inch (front 8.5Jx19, Rear 9.5JX 19)OFF SET-44 is the max you can go to.

You should just go with 19in wheels. Also, I would recommened purchasing your wheels from www.rpmrevolution.com. I purchased my wheels not too long ago, and found a great price from them. Keep us updated and post pictures of your vehicle.

Thanks WhiteBulletS55 and BLK04AMG for the suggestions!

Sorry for not responding sooner. Had some problems with my account.

I don't have any pictures of my '05 S55 yet cause it hasn't arrived yet.

It is scheduled to arrive at the end of this month.

BLK04AMG...if you get a chance...can you post some pics of your ride? Love to see those rims.

Still a little confused....many wheel shops say that 20" will fit and I've seen S500 with 20". From reading previous postings of WhiteBulletS55...I noticed you have a swb vehicle....does that make a difference?

I could understand the recommendation of 19"....from what I hear 20".... will be a rough ride?

Does anyone know whether changing the wheels will effect the tire pressure monitoring system?

Thanks!

I have 20's on mine...

I've had 20s on my 2002 S55 for about a month and I think it rides pretty good. Fronts are 20x9 with 245/35s and rears are 20x10 with 275/30s. I also have mine lowered and it doesn't rub at all. I believe as long as you get a superior quality wheel with the correct offset for your car it should ride pretty close to stock without sacrificing too much. Good luck to you and congratulations on the '05!

"As many of you guys know, I fitted 20" Brabus Monoblocks to my SL55. They look superb and improve the braking (a noticeable amount).

They are nicely made and are TuV approved.

BUT

The front tyres build up so much heat on the inner sidewall the tyres fail catastrosphically. THREE times in 6000 miles have I been stranded by this... The sidewalls are simply too small to dissapate the heat a 2 ton car produces when pressing on. Continental are to blame for this, but there are more issues as well.

The Ride quality is so jarring the roof is danger of falling off. It was stressing it so much that even over the slightest road ripple the hardtop creaked and groaned.

The rears rub when you really drive hard. If you hit a bump at full lateral G the outer sidewall of the tyre hits the inside of the wheelarch arch and can distort it. This then makes a nice rippled edge for the tyre to keep hitting and eventually it de-laminates causing yet another tyre failure. This is getting silly."

The SL weighs almost as much and has almost the same suspension set up as the S class, the cars are almost the same under the skin.

Yes, you made very good point.

I think if you want to go for `looks' go ahead with 20 inch. However, if you care about performance and less problems(as well as warranty issues, many MB dealer do not have the correct alignment machine for 20 inch and correct data) it is better to go for 19 inch.
AMG does not recommend 20 inch rims. You should E-mail to:
www3.mercedes-benz.com/omb/amg//en/home/index.htm
Then click on dialogue.

They will give you the right answer.

It really depends on your NEEDS. If you want your car strictly for show-off purpose, then get 20's. There hasnt been a single reported case of 20" tire blown up in NA (mind you almost all S/SL/CL with aftermarket wheels in California have 20's!!!). If you want to look good but have some kind of practicality, then get 19's. 20's are rough, there is no question about it.

If you need further advise, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail. I will be more than happy to help.

sometimes it's ok...most of the roads here are perfectly fine...and some other times it'll just be a pain...but MB vehicles fit into the wheels perfectly fine...i hope that made sense...if you have somebody in your area that has 20s...ride around in it...see how you like it...and do the same with 19s...that should help you out...other than that...
