2006 S55 transmission electrical plug

I bought a new 13 pin connector for the transmission on an auto parts website that said it fit my car but when raising the car and taking the protector pan off, I don’t see that plug anywhere??? Wtf? Is the store wrong or am I blind?

You will need to drop the pan on the tranny. Not sure what you mean by “protector pan” but you will be in a bunch of tranny fluid and might as well change the filter while you are in there.

You must not be looking hard enough to find the cable that connects to the transmission. It’s un-missable.

I bought the connector that seems to always get oil in the pins. I see it on Youtube being changed by rotating the plug to take it out, then loosen a 7MM center bolt and removing it. I don't see that big connector that's supposed to be in the front passenger side of the pan. What I'm trying to cure is the car intermittently getting the "Pre-Safe Unavailable" alarm and then the trans going into "Limp Mode" and being stuck in 2nd gear. It can happen even after hard braking. I have had it kick out of gear on a down shift and then bang back in like I got hit from behind. My 2006 S55 AMG has 71,000 miles. I'm wondering if it needs the trans flush or the connector or maybe even the shift module changed. My first thought was to change the pin connector on the trans but all I see are the routed lines for the O2 sensors at the front of the trans pan, not the connector.

You need the trans plug, new fluid and filter as @grepawk suggested. You might also need a new conductor plate. All known issues for these when they haven’t been cared for. And by “cared for” I mean fluid and filter at an absolute minimum every 5y/50k miles. If you can’t locate the plug you probably shouldn’t be trying to YouTube DIY this. Get it to someone and have it all done correctly, would be my advice.

At over 15y, if the fluid and filter have never been changed, be happy if you don’t need a new transmission.

EDIT... if these symptoms just started you MIGHT be OK with a basic service and plug.

Good news!

Good news, the detailed service records (car was from a car service fleet) says the transmission was flushed at 49K by a Mercedes dealer! I’m going to have the plug put in and get the trans flushed again though. The car hit 49K miles in 2009. It has 71K now but has been 13 years since the first flush.

Good news indeed. Fluid is likely low, guessing (crudely) from your description. Hopefully nothing is wrong with the conductor plate. I think you’re off to a good start. I ended up with an extra tuned TCU if you later decide you’re interested in such. PM me for details.

Cheers,

maw

Thanks, I got a quote today for the trans flush, plug and conductor plate. Is $1300 reasonable? This was from a very reputable independent import shop.

Wasn't it $550 when you first got the car, minus the conductor plate (which you may not need)? My advice would be to get the trans flush and fill w/the plug for now and see how that works. If you end up needing the plate, that'll be your second transmission flush. If not, just get another flush at the car's next service.

Here again, the price is much less relevant than the 2 years of driving that have passed since you first asked the question. They're not raping you... get it done already.

I don't want you to cause $2,000 worth of work trying to save or postpone $200. That's where people go wrong with these cars, and the car is ruined thereafter.

The transmission pan does not need to be dropped to change the 13-pin connector.

Here's a pic of where it's located. Remove the harness and use a 7mm socket to remove it.

You will need to remove a heat shield first. Once you do, you'll see it.

Electrical Plug

Thanks! I’m have a lot of experience fixing/restoring cars but I’m still apprehensive about doing anything to the Merc. The trans seems to be hemmed in by lots of shields making the plug hard to see.

Yes, I would say that $1,300 is reasonable. I had all of that done (fluid/filter/plug/conductor plate) last year on my S55 for around $600 labor with me supplying all of the parts.
