2001 S55 AMG: Getting the warning gong sound at random times for no apparent reasons

if u mean the ABC red light comes for a second and goes then this is your accumulators going bad , the car have two of them. one in the front and one in the back and my advice replace both of them together they are not that expensive ( get febi brand) there is a third one in the middle of the car under the steering rack but this one is a master one and usualy dosent get bad unless the other two is totally gone so u dont have to worry about that one yet...

Armed with codes, this should help… https://w220.wiki/M-B_Fault_Error_Co...ble_Codes_(DTC)

OP would know, because you HEAR the air pump periodically running (I have the same pump, literally, on my '04 Allroad). You'll NEVER hear the ABC pump running, because it's the tandem pump system, the same one used on my '92 500E. So if OP has EVER heard the pump running, that's air, not fluid hydraulics.

EDIT... Wikipedia says all S55's came with ABC ... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_S-Class_(W220) ... so I'll rely on my previous questions about what the dash says. If the dash is quiet by the time he notices, my bet is the fluid is low. Next bet will be accumulators as noted above.
