2001 S55 AMG: Getting the warning gong sound at random times for no apparent reasons

The gong comes on when the key is inserted, then stops when the engine is started. Which is normal. Then, while reversing a short distance, it will come on for a brief moment. Then, while driving on a smooth surface road it will come on intermittently for no apparent reason. This isn't continuous, it will just come on briefly while driving. I suspect a leveling sensor or something similar, but if any one else has had this problem would appreciate their input.

can you clarify what do u mean by the gong sound ??
if u mean the ABC red light comes for a second and goes then this is your accumulators going bad , the car have two of them. one in the front and one in the back and my advice replace both of them together they are not that expensive ( get febi brand) there is a third one in the middle of the car under the steering rack but this one is a master one and usualy dosent get bad unless the other two is totally gone so u dont have to worry about that one yet...

What does the dash say, if anything, and is it white or red letters? Your car has air suspension, not hydraulic, and IIRC it doesn’t have Pre-Safe either, which rules out the other cause I have in mind. So what the dash says is the first hint. If the dash says nothing I think you need to hook it up and read codes. Sorry, but I’ve had that gong for various reasons ABC and Pre-Safe related over the years but none of it pertains to your car necessarily.

Armed with codes, this should help… https://w220.wiki/M-B_Fault_Error_Co...ble_Codes_(DTC)

ABC was available

Is it possible the pre-2003 S55 AMG could have ABC?

That's a good question @GrepAwk . I don't have anything definitive because I haven't looked. But I'm pretty sure ABC is a 2003+ system. A close friend had a 2002 S55, but that was almost 20 years ago. And while I'm pretty sure he was talking about air hydraulics back then, I wouldn't dare trust my memory for that.

OP would know, because you HEAR the air pump periodically running (I have the same pump, literally, on my '04 Allroad). You'll NEVER hear the ABC pump running, because it's the tandem pump system, the same one used on my '92 500E. So if OP has EVER heard the pump running, that's air, not fluid hydraulics.

EDIT... Wikipedia says all S55's came with ABC ... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_S-Class_(W220) ... so I'll rely on my previous questions about what the dash says. If the dash is quiet by the time he notices, my bet is the fluid is low. Next bet will be accumulators as noted above.
