Upgrade from Comand 2.5 to NTG1 Comand APS

Hello. I have a sweet 2000 s500 with the Bosch Comand 2.5 and I got a NTG1 Comand APS unit from a 2005 s55 from the scrap yard because I thought it might be a better looking upgrade. I have looked into this for a bit now but I keep running into upgrades to modern android systems. I discovered that the newer units have fiber optics but I have trouble finding what is that for or any information where the fiber optics lead to. Also is there even a chance I might make that unit work?
Thanks

well i have been ther 4 years ago and let me tell u something , its not what u think.....
the short answer is what u heared is right go with android or stick with what u have

the long anser is this :
first you need to determin if you have a fiber optics or normal wirres system... there is 2 ways to know that
1- remove the head unit and see if you can find orange cable connected to the back.
2- remove the trimming in the trunk left side and see if u have amplifier there and bunch of orange cables there.

if u have any of those then u have a fiber optics system and for this model it's called D2B system ..... if that is true then to convert ur system to the new NTG1 you will have to remove all the wiring from the old system and the BCM and almost every wiling harness in the interior to do that along with many other stuff ... TRUST ME its not worth it

installing android unit with this system ( two ways to do that )
1-
you will have to buy a kit that can delete the fiber optics and concert it to normal RCA cables and this will lower your audio quality significantly.
2- find an adapter to convert from the old D2B fiber optics to RCA cable while keeping all your fiber optics wiring .... ( at the time i did this research i found only one guy in germany on facebook who was selling this expermental convertor for 80$) and he is not easy to find ... i contacted him 4 years ago. if u want his contact i will have to dig in my old messages .

if you have a wired system ( which i highly doubt it) then u can install an android unit easly....

FINALLY here is what i did....
first i assume u r di=oing this for the music AUX or bluetooth cabability .. if so then the only way i found at that time was using a old tape shape i bought from amazon with an external mic .. u insert it in the tape casset and connet it with your phone bluetooth and now u can have calles and music played on the amazing sound of harmen kardon car sound system with minimal quality sacrifice .....
