Can anyone recommend a gearbox specialist South Wales near Newport / Bristol? Does anyone know if Avantgarde in Bristol / Portershead does gearboxes.... or what my options are....? I've read that Gloucester Road Gearbox will collect gearboxes for service...
In the run up to 'my issues', my delightful S65 had occasional popped out of gear (free reving whilst still in D). You could just put it in N and back to D and it would pick up fine.
So I got the fluid flushed but withing a couple of months, having initially seemed much better, it's rapidly deteriated and left me stranded (today).... It felt a bit different when it failed today, the other times it had done it, there had been an 'implausible speed' code and there was a bit of a thump as it went into free reving (whilst still in D).... but everything 'felt' clean, just like it had missed a shift. I could just put it in N and back to D and it was fine.... this time today, after it popped out of gear (whilst still in D), it didn't sound happy / free reving in D, I don't know how to explain it, it just felt bad (I think it might have ben whining)..... after a while with the engine off, it did eventually go into drive and power it's self, so it's not completely terminal, but something is very unhappy....
I haven't read the codes yet, but apparently the my local specialist as popped the tray and fluids is looking silvery...
I have very little knowledge on automatic transmissions but it felt to me like the lock up begining to fail as on the last few miles before it failed I thought traction control was kicking on (it's was raining very heavily and pooling on the road)... but I think now in hindsight it was the torque converter slipping / locking up...
I had also recently noticed there had been a low frequency vibration at motorway speeds that went on acceleration (or any thrust) but would be there on coasting, I thought that might be transmission/axel mountings but wonder if that could all be related to torque converter failing....
I won't be doing it myself, so my main thought is to get it into a specialist transmission place.... either removed from the car or get the whole car flat towed.....
Just hoping for some advice!
