I floated this in another forum, but did any of you consider both the 550 and S63 and end up with the 63? If so, why? Thanks

I just went through this process. I drove a 2010 S550 for the last few years and was ready to trade to a 2015 S550. I test drove a few but could not find the right combination of colors and options for me, then I came across a 2015 S63 and bought it.

Why? Because it has everything the 550 does plus more power and a generally sportier attitude. Being one that values those attributes I decided to go for it. It's only been 2 weeks but so far zero buyers remorse.

My dad told me to pick out a car for my mom. So I built one loaded S550 and one loaded S63. She was coming out of a 2002 Mercedes S500 with the AMG sport package, with 40,000 miles. They are in there 80's. I told my dad why not go all out, you only live once. Lets get mom the real deal, AMG. So she got a special built fully loaded white 2016 S63 AMG sedan 4matic. They love it and could not be happier. There are two Mercedes dealers that have seen this car. Both have said they have never seen such a comprehensive build sheet and color combination.

Agreed with above said things. It's hard to find well loaded S550.

Pros - its a rocket propelled limo... a few cosmetic tweaks not avail on s550, a few special options.
Cons - If U put rather high miles annually S63 will devalue more, Fuel Economy is awful on S63 (if U care about it, much much worse than S550 I owned 2), slightly higher Maintenance cost, slightly higher insurance rate. Transmission could be better...

Great build indeed but assuming your Mom is in her 80s I doubt she drives the car as hard as a typical AMG owner in his 40s.
For her, CCBS are a waste of money and a less convenient choice for daily driving then standard steel brakes.
CCCBs are much more sensitive and require more attention, are more grabby and more difficult to modulate.

I agree, however when my dad and I go out, the vehicle is driven extremely hard. My dad can not drive it due to his stroke, however I do take him out for some fun on the weekends. We have met a lot of fun people on our rides. We have had it up to about 140 so far. It is effortless to gain momentum. We love the car. Yes my mom drives it, she has only left people at the stop light twice. According to my dad. She also likes the car in sport mode (so she can hear the exhaust).

Seems like, a lot of wasted money on options for your mom in her 80's... How old are you? Do you have an AMG or MB too?

I just attached all the pix cuz it seemed like the popular thing to do.

Not really a waste of money, if they enjoy the car. Witch they do. I just take my dad on more spirited driving sessions. We really put the car through its paces and might track it some, later this year. They have had Mercedes for many years. 80 300SD turbo diesel, 81 300SDL turbo diesel, 86 560SL, 87 560SEL, 2002 S500 AMG sport package, and now a 2016 S63 AMG 4matic sedan. He just wanted her to have something very special, since they plan on not buying any more cars. I said why not go all out and get her a loaded AMG. So that's what we did. I did all the research. So what you see is what we got. My moms only stipulation was, gold calipers, white paint and a spoiler. It was ordered in February of 2016 and we took delivery in September 2016. I am 47 years old. I am an automotive technician by trade. I work at a Lexus dealership and have been there since I got out of school in 1993. I have been there second longest than anyone else. My dad owned a produce company, which he eventually retired when he was in his 50's. Sold out to three investors, who eventually ran it into the ground and also got into trouble with the government (for some reason?). I own a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin turbo (original owner), 2003 Infiniti Q45 Premium, 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum Premium, and a 2015 Nissan Juke NISMO RS AWD. I work on all of our cars. However my moms car go's to the dealer for its service needs. My dad bough the Mercedes extended warranty and the Mercedes Maintenance package. My parents are just amazed at the technology of the vehicle. I try and teach them something new about every other weekend. Its a lot for them to learn. My dad however wanted all the safety tech stuff.

No, not a waste of money if they enjoy and use it. I wouldn't think the CCB's were needed, the rear entertainment, CF trim or the 3d sound, amongst others.

You checked every option box there was, no wonder the ppl at MB never came by a car like that.

Dont get me wrong, it's an amazing car, and if they have the money, good for them.

My dad just wanted my mom to have something special. They both love cars. I take it to cars and coffee when possible. I get your drift on some of the options. However, I want to say, it makes them feel young again. My dad does not drive it, due to a stroke he had years ago. However, if he feels comfortable driving it, I may have him drive it sometime this summer. We used to have so much fun in the 87 560SEL. Boy could that car run.

Years from now, my wife will be like your parents. Except that autonomous cars will be plenty. We'll occasionally program a race driver profile and just enjoy the ride.

Wow that is a beautiful vehicle! Where did you get it customized at or is that all factory built? I have been shopping around an AMG S63 for a while now and love being inspired by works of art like that.

What's the coldest you get, and how long does it take the brake squeak to go away? Like a 100 foot drag on the pedal?

Here in Kansas we have the best of everything. Cold, heat, humidity, storms etc. During the winter at least this year it was below zero. As for the carbon brakes. If you drive the vehicle aggressively there is no noise. If you drive the car like a grandma, you can get some noise from the brakes. I would say they can be noisier in the winter than in the summer. When my mom drives it, she does get brake squeak. When I take my dad for spirited driving, no noise. I told my mom at the next service, I will inquire about Mercedes bulletin LI42.10-P061456. This is a bulletin I found which does fit my moms squeak to a T. The bulletin states. Brake squeal just before standstill-ceramic brakes (code B07). It states for the dealer to replace no parts, as this will do nothing. They are working on a remedy. I hope this helps.

Got it, so if you're doing city driving in the cold, it is just going to squeak like a school bus right before you come to a stop

I was hoping you would say if you drag the brakes once for a few 100 feet, the rotors are warm enough so there's no more squeak

Sorry jenz. I will find out more when I take the vehicle in for its second service. I will inquire about the service bulletin. Plus I have a few questions for the Renntech representative. The car is still awesome in my book.

Jenz, I just dropped it off tonight and they said they would call tomorrow. I will keep you posted. One of the operators/secretaries said she thought they did have a fix available now for the CCB. They are suppose to get started first thing in the morning. ins1gnia, I think I have seen your vehicle at some of the cars and coffee and I think at one of the Aristocrat shows. We try and bring it to most cars and coffee and we made it to one Aristocrat show last year.

S550 vs S63
I have had both. S550 was great and was planning to either extend the lease or get a new one. I came from an E63 as a daily driver and missed the power and sound of the AMG exhaust. Strangely enough, having and S550 and then driving the SLS on weekends and special occasions isn't enough to subdue the urge of daily AMG loveliness .

Anyway, different vehicles. Both comfortable, the S550 more so. The S63 is louder and worse on gas, but it is fast as hell. I was very impressed, however with the S550 in sport mode and most people will probably never need anything more than that. We, car enthusiasts, are crazy however and I bought the 2016 S63 and had it RennTech'd thru the dealership. Absolutely, amazing!!!! Would never be able to tell just cruising around town but put your foot down (comfort or Sport) and brace for Warp speed!!!
