I just bought a 2009 S63 AMG, and it has "Designo" on the center, is that a special edition? Or what does it mean. Also, is there a way with the VIN to find out the original purchase/order/spec? thx in advance.
Yup that is correct, it is an MB term, for one of the exclusive custom trim options. It is replaced by MANUFAKTUR now but same idea, Nappa leather is part of Designo I think.
OP it just means the previous owner custom ordered the car or something with options dealerships don't order themselves, or with options that are less common.
On the W221 it makes a huge difference. Essentially every surface is covered in Nappa Leather or alcantara. I had a 2012 S550 with it and it makes the car feel so much more upscale.
