190D Saves Its Owner
Mighty D gave its life to save my dad

Our old family car turned into a lifesaver in holiday collision
By Nadia Araiinejad
Three days before Christmas, my dad was driving down Alabama 36, coming back from a business meeting in Birmingham. As he neared Huntsville on this rural, two-lane highway, the unexpected happened. A drunk driver with a suspended license suddenly pulled his car out in front of my dad and directly into his lane.
A horrific crash occurred. My dad not only survived but had only bumps and bruises. Was it a miracle? Or was it the Mighty Diesel? I believe it was both.
Let me fill you in. The car my dad was driving was a 1987 Mercedes Benz 190 D. This car was family. We fondly called the car the Mighty Diesel because it ran on diesel fuel, which made it extremely loud and very distinctive.
My parents bought Mighty D in 1987, when my brother was 2 years old. They kept that car for my brother, who drove it to high school. My dad always said it would one day be mine, but Mighty was getting older and became the extra car that was always ready to go if one of the other cars broke down.
Up to the day of the crash, I guess I never appreciated that noisy old car. On that terrible day, my brother was home from college when the call came about the accident. He rushed out to find our dad shaken up but on his own two feet.
Mighty was in critical condition, the exterior destroyed. But inside, the car was perfectly intact. The 20-year-old car's airbags worked and saved my dad from what could have been a nightmare.
Old Mighty is no longer with us. The Diesel was totaled in the accident, but it really went out with a bang. I was sad to see Mighty D go, but it left us with deep appreciation for the greatest Christmas blessing ever.
