2004 sl55 power loss and transmition sticks

i have a 2004 sl55 and recently i noticed a major loss of power when i hit the gas all the way it doesnt do it all the time but after i floor it a couple of times it feels like the supercharger gets stuck and when that happens i try to downshift but nothing happens and if i hit the gas the car revs high but no power and the engine sounds very soft it doent have the load roaring noise it usally has.after driving for a while without hitting the gas pedal hard the car goes back to normal.I only get this problem if i try to floor the gas pedal a few times.I have an appointment on tuesday for service but i was wondering if anybody had the same problem or if anybody might know what that might be.thanks.

My semi-educated guess - your intercooler pump has died. It's been a common problem, and it's easily fixed with the updated pump.

Yes, it is most likely the problem. These pumps have short lifespans!

Yes, after the pump is replaced, your car should return to its normal state.

It would return to normal as the heat in the intercooler coolant dissipated. The car will run normally until the next time you get on the gas, at which point the intercooler will rapidly heat up (no fluid circulation) and the car will go into limp mode.

Not to worry, it's a straightforward fix.

man this forum is great it would have took me longer just to check my car in at the dealer let alone explain the problem to my service advisor and then taking him for a drive to show him what the car is doing .I will tell him to change the ic pump now because of what i learned from this post that is exactly what is happening.and it happens when i drive the car hard and thats when the car heats up and thats when the supercharger shuts down.i will post the results of my repairs on tuesday.last question, can this car be driven hard or will i kill it if i do.the cars feels so nice when driven a little hard the ingine roars and it feels you just got propelled out of a barrel of a shotgun its just an awsome feeling.

I believe the pump is a recall item, so you shouldn't be paying for it.

Search on the E55 board for comments related to this recall. A pre-service dyno may be in order.

If you don't drive the car hard, you are required to surrender it to someone who will. It's in the fine print of your contract.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 04 SL55. Satish at Motorwerks diagnosed the problem over the phone and I had it fixed under warrenty at the dealership. It was the sensor on the water pump, just as he said, and it ran fine after the fix.

i just got the car back from my dealership after i took it in for the intercooler pump they gave me the car back with the same problem and they said they changed some rely on recall and they said they did a performance test on the car and everything was normrl and they are trying to tell me that the lag or loss of power i feel is normal and to drive the car for a while to see if it feels diffrent,I'm very pissed off right now because i spent time on the forum getting the right answers and i went to the dealer i told them exactly whats wrong with the car and they still cant get it right
i had the car for about two years and i know its not driving right and when the supercharger quits it feels like a honda i paid the extra 40k over a regular sl just to feel the amg supercharger .and they are trying to tell me its normal to have it quit !!!!.i picked up the car late and the techs were gone i'm taking the car tomorow and i will give them 40k worth of rage!!!!!

Which is your dealership? Once I took mine to the MB of Ft. Lauderdale for regular maintenance work and I asked them to check the backlight on the A/C console. When I picked up the car, they told me that I needed to replace the whole console. After doing some research on my own, I bought the key to pull the unit out and found that the bulp needed to be replaced, it cost me only $4.00 to replace it !!!

Question

did any lights/warnings light up in the dash?

the same exact thing happened to me last night (05 E55). i took it to the dealer, told my sa all the symptoms, (i thought it was the belt or s/c clutch). the i spoke to a tech after he test drove it. he said everything is normal and the s/c was working fine .(i hate when they cant replicate the prob.) he said they will hook it up to the diagnistics machine, will it show up on there?

thanks

my dealership is in pembrokepines
its easy to duplicate the problem you have to floor it for a few miles let the supercharger heat up and then try to floor it again and just like that your driving a minivan
i was not there with the tech when he test drove it they told me he will find the problem for sure not to worry!! yeah right!!!!!

It may not show up in the diagnostics.
I just sent the following fax to my SA to make sure they fix the problem. (Thanks to Marcus on the E55 board.)

Here is the text from a work order performed on an E55 that had the same power loss problems as mine:

343 WMB (N/C)
541012 Test Program - After Short Test, Perform
343 WMB (N/C)
1 000-500-01-86 PUMP (N/C)
090000 Replace Air Cooler Circulation Pump
343 WMB (N/C)

CODES FOR CIRUCLATION PUMP FOR SUPERCARGER PERFORMED SDS TEST

FOUND CODES FOR AIR COOLER CIRUCLATION PUMP. PERFORMED FUNCTION CHECK PER SDS REPLACED PUMP WITH UPDATED

If the I/C pump is the problem then a fault code will have been stored for sure. The code will be for IAT too high and the star machine will recommend the I/C pump get checked.....I saw this printout when I had the same problem.
....if you get stuck pm me and I will scan the star machine printout and mail it to you.

Right, it should give codes for the problem. The TTV12 has the same sort of codes. They shut it down because of excessive intake air temperatures and potential damage to the engine.

Thats the advantage of having the clutch on the Kompressor engine. Instead of retarding timing and limiting the engines output, you can just kill the supercharger entirely.

The problem has occured on the 32's as well. The coolant pump swap is pretty simple. Had a guy get his replaced at my place of employment because it was making abnormal noises when he parked it in his garage. The close quarters just made the odd sound of the "soon to fail" pump more noticeable. We replaced it no questions asked.

thank you guys, picked up the car yesterday, runs fine now.
i called my sa and left him a message saying it was the ic pump. he called me later in the day and asked how i knew. it showed up on the diagnostics.

he said that he only had 3 cars w/ that problem (incl. mine), then he was like "some people dont even know its not working b/c they dont get the s/c temp. high enough, we both started cracking up (he has a 2500hp drag car )
