Newest steering wheel in W211 ?
#51
Im pretty happy with the SL63 wheel in my car. Some of the newer Mercedes steering wheels have much lower quality materials (fake leather, lots of plastic bits, etc).

I've heard of this done before. I believe they transplanted the steering column itself (yoke and all) from W212. How they got the steering wheel buttons to work is a mystery.

Ok thanks joe, Im in contact with the owner and the tech that offers these swaps but unfortunately they are both in Germany... so google translate is my best friend right now.. I will post an update to this when i receive input back from them. Im still thinking of just going with the sl wheel but lets see where this goes..

Holy Cow that looks amazing! What year E is that? I think the 03-04 guys are screwed unless they change the steering collum. But, what about 05-09 55/63?
I wonder if the spline is same on W212 as W211 05-09?

bolt it on is one thing... all button lights up and function is another.
its a risk you have to take.... when I did my 2010 sl63 wheel I wasn't sure if it was going to work or not .. I just guessed because I bet it was the same as the old SL / CLS which is interchangeable with e55.
these newer wheels I don't think all the buttons will work. GL

I just did this same swap on my 05. Everything bolts up and plugs in stock like it was always there.

Thanks so much!! I bought it from a guy here who had it in his wife's car and was only six months old. I had to purchase the air bag unit from the dealer though. Everything plugged right it and all works normal.

If i get the BS wheel, as I cannot take a risk with the new 3 spoke 218/204 retrofit, would all the buttons work...I don't have the steering wheel gear shift buttons on my car.
Would simply coding 428 in the VEDOK make them work?

My car is a 2005 so not sure if that makes a difference but, have read on here it dose in terms of a direct fit considering everything being a plug in and you're good to go. Mine plugged right up and yes, everything works. All the buttons function just like the original stock unit. No issues at all.

With no further information regarding the new wheel fitting, I guess this is the only way to go...
Is the same plug and play true for the SL63 P30 wheel also? The one with the large aluminum V bottom spoke?

looking forward to hear more information about install new generation steering wheel in W211.
In my opinion, the protocol between w211 and w212/w176/w205 are totally different, and the mounting hole on steering column is different too.
So, if someone can actually fit the new steering wheel on w211, the steering column must be swapped, and I don't think the functions of all buttons(including the backlight) working.

Keep in mind that most 3 spoke steering wheels came with the Takata "explode in your face and murder you" airbags.
Check your numbers for a recall.
