Where is this leak coming from?? **PICTURES INSIDE**
I've been hearing a weird sound coming from what seems like underneath my car so today I raised her up and this is what I found behind the driver side motor mount on the steering rack(?):
An esteemed mercedes tech i've consulted with made an educated guess after asking me certain questions that the fluid is hydraulic fluid from my motor mounts.
I smelled the fluid thats gathered in my splash guard and it smells like clutch fluid. I visually checked my motor mounts and they look collapsed but i don't really see fluid seeping from them.
Anybody have a similar experience that can chime in and hopefully confirm the motor mounts theory or point me in the right direction? Thank you!
Go on a dead road, Open your hood put the car in drive and hold the brake and rev to 2000 rpm, if the motor is hopping right out of the engine bay its your motor mounts.

I'll try that tmrw. I'm a little afraid though because what if its NOT the motor mounts and the fluid is leaking from somewhere else and me just driving it exacerbates the damage
How is your power steering fluid? A little oil goes a long way in making a mess though.
I checked the reservoir and it looks like its topped off. Also the power steering fluid kind of smells like soy sauce.. the fluid on my splash guard smells like clutch fluid.
What do you mean when you say clutch fluid? Transmission fluid? I have an upper timing cover leak and have oil in the same area. Are you sure it isn't oil?
If your so worried simple solution spend some money and have it diagnosed. If your "worried" but to cheap to get it inspected then that's your prerogative.

I recently changed my clutch on my m5 and the clutch fluid I used to bleed it smells like what's on my splash guard. I'm not sure what transmission fluid smells like though so I guess I can't rule it out yet. I checked for oil leaks and didn't find any. I do believe my pcv is bad though and I have read that it would be leaking oil if it was. I'll check it out today and report back
Thats way too much fluid to be from the motor mounts. The motor mounts did pop at some point either been repaired before or these ones popped. you can tell by the stain on the power steering rack but its all dried up and old looking.
It look like the rack itself is seeping. Clean the under tray with brake clean and the rack. Put it back on and then go drive it.
I took it in to have my transmission fluid changed and had my indy take a look.
Youre right on the money.
Looks like power steering fluid is leaking from the steering rack somewhere. It looks like its easy to drop the steering rack mount to look and find where its leaking from but i don't know how to keep the steering rack itself from falling on me when i do this.
Has this happened to you before? Or do you know where to look?

You are also correct. My driver side motor mount started leaking a little bit of fluid and the residue dried up on the steering rack. So now I need to change my motor mounts AND find/stop the leak somewhere on my steering rack
CarbonHan any update on where it is leaking from on the steering rack?
not yet. I've been driving the x6m a lot lately because i'm too lazy to get under the car and take the steering rack mount off. I'll probably get to it sometime this coming week.
That fluid is definitely coming from the engine mounts.
Its a mixture of power steering fluid leaking from the power steering lines to the steering rack or possibly from the steering rack... AND motor mount fluid. I had the bad luck of both of these things happening at the same time...RIGHT after getting my headbolts, cams and lifters replaced.
