Loud, bright, spicy.....they are all subjective.
Just cos some cop with a hangover and a flag football concussion thinks your car is loud doesn't mean its illegally so. Where I live the cops ride motorcycles that are louder than my car and I have the same setup as you, but I still get people that wave me to slow down just cos of the sound, even though Im going the speed limit.

You need to look into this more closely. I am 100% sure this is not just a "plead guilty and pay a fine". CA are like ***** when it comes to this stuff. Once you get a "fixit" ticket, it is a *must* go to get it visually inspected. It's like a summons, they're not ****ing around. You're not getting out of this with just a fine, they *will* visually inspect your car, and I can guarantee you that they know exactly what needs to be where, and if something is missing or altered.
Right now, you need to be looking into swapping some stock parts back on there, or you're not going to be driving until you do. Sorry.

well what he got me for is exactly: VC27151(a) (I) Modification of Exhaust System
No meter involved, car was off and stayed off when I was pulled over. Ill have to give that a shot, but God I hate court rooms. He was also a Lead of some kind. They only give the watch commanders and stuff the SUV's. he was an older guy, looks like hes done his time and now just messes with kids in cars.

I've never gotten in trouble for exhaust before but I gotta imagine it's a longshot for the cop.

I'd be very surprised if he showed up to court then. Even if he does what is he going to say? "His car is too loud!!!". Without some sort of guideline or decibel limit to go off of it is just his opinion.

You guys don't get it. Cops can do whatever they want. Even if he doesn't have a db measurement device, or in one case of mine a radar gun or any other speed-measurement device, in court the judge can rule based upon the experience of the officer. They can do or say anything they want. I got a speeding ticket 20yrs ago in a school zone because the cop thought I was going too fast, even though it was never measured (I was maybe 5mph over). The judge ruled against me in court based upon the officers xx number of years of experience in judging these things. He was observing my speed in his rearview mirror from the far end of the zone. They can do anything they want. You think a judge is really going to rule against a cop an what he determined was too loud? Don't waste your time.
You're not going to win. Get it fixed, even if temporarily.

193$ it seems from this source since we're talking about OC here. Seems like a pay the fine and forget about it situation. From my own personal situation when I got the same violation it was a pay and go with no inspection required (This was Venice/Santa Monica area). That was 2012, so I wouldn't be surprised if things were changed. I'll have to find the ticket to see if it was the exact same vehicle code violation, but I remember the cop told me that my exhaust was too loud, among a few other things.

NOTES: (A) Violation cited on a notice to appear as not eligible for correction. (VC 40303.5, VC 40522, and VC 40610.) A citing officer may issue a noncorrectable notice to appear for an equipment, driver's license, or registration offense that is potentially eligible for correction if the officer determines that the violation presents an immediate safety hazard, there is evidence of fraud or persistent neglect, or the violator does not agree to, or cannot, promptly correct the violation. (See California Highway Patrol v. Superior Court (2008) 158 Cal.App.4th 726 [riding a motorcycle without wearing any helmet presents an "immediate safety hazard" when an officer makes that determination and issues a noncorrectable citation].) If a citation does not indicate that an offense is eligible for correction under VC 40522, a court may presume that the offense is cited as noncorrectable. (See also id . at p. 740 [a court may infer from the type of citation issued that the officer did or did not find disqualifying circumstances].)

Looks like it's gonna have to get fixed then unfortunately. They'll more than likely show up to the hearing if you go that route. Beach cops having nothing better to do then bust people for alcohol on the beach, and these types of things. A court date would basically be the only thing on their schedule for the whole entire week month.

In Cali just tell cops its an AMG, it sounds like that stock. Still though you're right about beach cops. I live in Huntington and try to avoid driving through the city or getting egged on by anyone. Doesn't matter if you're in the right or not, they'll write a fix it ticket for whatever they perceive and leave it for you to fight later. Now if you have no CEL and your primary cats are there I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get someone to sign it off. Does your friend have what they need to swap parts out if thats the direction you go?
