Filter replacement and removal?!?
I am getting ready to do a Service D interval on my car. It says I have to change some filters. Other than the regular motor air filters it says I have to change the cabin filter and a charcoal filter. I have read about people removing the charcoal filter. My question is, what should I remove and what should I replace? And what is the difference if I remove?

Only the e63 have charcoal filters the e55 don't have them. You can replace the air filters and the cabin filter. The cabin filters are located below the glove box in the passenger footwell area.

2004 E55 AMG; 1995 Porsche 993 Cab.
My 04 E55 has (two) cabin filters under the dash (2118300818) as well as a single filter located above the aux battery under the hood. (2118300018)
They are all activated Carbon filters.
How do i know? I recently replaced all three.
FWIW- I bought all mine from Autohausaz.com - about $120 IIRC.

Very strange. Mine's an '05, and when I call up the filter PN in the EPC for the underdash filters, they come up as "not valid on this model" or something to that effect. I'd be very curious to see what comes up if your car's VIN were entered in the EPC.
I wouldn't be surprised if a tech at the dealer stuck a filter in your engine compartment housing not knowing your car had the older under the dash set-up.
How's the actual air flow? I would think it's diminished from what it should be as a result of too many filters.

And I stand corrected based on a little EPC research. Apparently early cars got both the big filter in the engine compartment and the little ones in the passenger compartment. Later models only have the combi filter in the engine compartment.

Not sure if that's a true statement.

05 E55 AMG, 05 S2000
I have 05 E55. & I only have the filter above the Aux Battery under the hood.
I took the panel off under the glove box, & other misc pieces and I don't see any filters under the passenger side.
I have a buddy with a non AMG E series, and I know what the filters look like under the glove box cause he has them & we've changed them.
Very odd, anyone else having this issue? i'm confused because I got the 2x inside filter from my local auto parts. Any feedback?

Strange
Really really stange, but all I can think of it is has to do with year/ country perhaps.
I took mine of again yesterday just to double check I have
1 filter engine bay above small battery
2 filters under glove box
all 3 are charcoal- filters.
So did some digging, models with activated charcoal filters
it seems it has been discontinued and replaced with a combined filter, I did not find anything in WIS about it just looked my 2004 up but I see a lot of questions about this I can imagine is the same for our E55/E63 as for the E500
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w211...-e500-has.html
only I just replaced mine yesterday got 2 new ones matching the old and they are not combo but still Charcoal filters so an a little ??
lol still guessing is the same and this answer our questions why some has it some don't

The charcoal cabin filter helps to eliminate odors, as well as filter out contaminants from the outside. if removed, you will have pure outside air coming inside your vehicle without be filtered, this includes dust, sand, pollen, and even bugs. So don't do it. just replace the filter.

I just found about them the other day. I finally have some free time after work today and am planning on pulling them out of mine.

I run a Carbonio CF air intake, and they do not have the charcoal filter in them. They supposedly have a 18-21 HP gain, and 14-18 lbs/ft. torque increase. Well, I really can't feel it from the seat of my pants. But the car has more giddy up

2005 E55 AMG, 1991 MR2
Sorry to bring this back up again. I have a 2005. Local parts person has sold me a particulate filter (white, not charcoal activated) for the engine compartment. Car now smells of exhaust in traffic. He claims there is are two charcoal ones under the dash. Pelican parts claim I have the single engine bay combined (particulate and charcoal) filter and no under dash one. I know the original one I pulled out was the charcoal activated model by micronair (oem supplier to MB).
When did the change happen, it seems to be from 2004 to 2005 they went from 3 filters to the single engine bay combination filter. Is this correct?
I don't like pulling that plastic cover under the dash, always a pain to get back in correctly but where under that would the filters be located? I didn't notice anything obvious last time I had it off for head unit install. Thanks for the help.
