Anyone ever heard of the color "Fire Opal?"

I was looking at the MB Australia Configurator, and they show a color called Fire Opal as being available as a standard color on the SL. It appears that it is a solid color red, similar to our old Mars Red. On that site, they also offer "Designo Hyacinth Red Metallic," which appears to be our current Designo Cardinal Red Metallic. Anyone know about Fire Opal? Any members here from down under?

Here are two photos from the site, showing the two colors. Fire Opal is on top:

This touch up paint site lists Mars Red and Fire Opal as the same paint.....

Local SA said multiple problems with Mars Red. Blisters, peeling, holidays(halos) such that many require repainting. Unexplained phenomenon.

I was told the same thing by MBUSA, but I can only call that B.S. For HOW many years has MB been painting cars Mars Red? I had a 2004 SL500 in Mars Red and when I sold it, after 12 years, it looked as good as it did the day I took delivery.

My feeling is that they are receiving a ton of backlash for having dropped the color and that this is the kind of B.S. they are using as an excuse.

There are multiple threads about this issue on MBWorld. The dealership I have purchased my Mercedes from has had to repainted several Mars red cars due to problems with integrity of clear coat. It occurred on cars built in the Bremen plant. w204 x204 Slk e class coupe and cabrio. Mercedes recognized this problem.

Well, there certainly could be problems with a bad batch of paint or clear coat material, but I have a very hard time believing that the problem was related to the pigment. Red paint, white paint, blue paint. If MB is saying that all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they are unable to paint their vehicles a solid color red, then the end of the world is nye. Isn't it amazing that those crazy Italians can still paint their cars bright red with no issues, not to mention the Japanese, the Brits and the Americans. I still say it's a B.S. excuse and further proof that the Germans think we are idiots.

Agree with you. I think it was a problem over a certain period of time with clear coat at one factory.
