DIY oil change question
I'm almost positive these are the two plugs but can someone verify? Also what is that last piece connected to the second shield I took down to access the front plug? This is a CLS55, but I figured it would be the same and e55 forum is busier so I posted here as well.

As others have noted, those are the two plugs. Note that MB says they should be replaced with new plugs and copper washers each oil change. The plugs come pre-coated with a thread locking compound. So if this was done on the previous change, they will be an absolute bear to remove.
Putting on my safety hat now. I don't see any jack stands in your photos. Please don't ever get under a car supported only by a jack. It is not safe and not worth the risk. Always use multiple jack stands or ramps when getting underneath a car.

Also, since you are asking about number of drain plugs, make damn sure you know how to change the oil filter cartridge as getting it wrong risks the engine.

Can't use topside extraction on an E55K. It has two sumps to empty, and the dipstick tube accesses only the rear, smaller of the two. It's one of the few MB vehicles that must be done the conventional way.

I also plan to use it on the transmission in between filter changes when I just want to change what is in the pan.

You can't get every drop regardless of approach but my last extraction on the E55 yielded 9 liters which to me is fine for my 6000 mile change interval. If I left a liter of motul 5w40 xcess in there I think it will be fine.

It was on jack stands, but I kept the jack up on the front jack point also while I was under the car. I didn't replace the plugs, but did replace the cooper washers. I checked the plugs twice since the change and I didn't see any seepage. I will probably replace the plugs next time as well.
