I picked uo a 2003 garaged SL500 with 45k on it. I am doing some typ car guy checking on the new addition. So I have read all the posts about oil changes and pumping as opposed to draining. I ordered the dipstick on line but in the interim, I used the dipstick from my Ram which is a lot longer just to check the condition of the oil. So I bottom it out and it comes up dry. I used a wire hanger for giggles and get a sparse amount of oil, It seemed to slide across the bottom of the pan so it should be covered on oil ...right? The sensor says the level is good. I am thinking I will need to do it the old fashion way to be sure.
The oil pan on your SL500 is divided into 2 section, an upper and a lower. There is a baffle in the upper section. When your OEM dipstick arrives, you'll notice that it has an elongated thicker piece of plastic as it's tip. This guarantees that it'll work it's way into the lower pan section. Attached are pictures of the innards of your oil pan for reference...
