Time for change
Whoa, not true at all. Where did you get this from? The E550, ML550, SL600 and S600 Coupe all were cancelled due to them being poor sellers. It had ZERO to do with CAFE standards. These cars would still be around if people bought them. The current E-Class Cabriolet still has a E550 variant. The S550 now S560 isn't going anywhere. The regular wheelbase S600 sedan we cancelled in the U.S. market because next to the Maybach S600 it didn't make sense anymore.
That said the V8 will become an AMG only or a upper S/SL engine option in the future because the new I6 is just that good, see the new Euro S500 with the new I6 making 435hp. Rumors point to a new V12 which would be easy as pie now with the I6 architecture.

New S500 costed 35+% more than today's S560 (in '17$)
Prob a hell of a lot less safe tires/brakes/chassis/structures/airbag systems at any speed
Somewhere nr that time US had silly 55MPH speed lims
LA air quality was much worse than today, despite far fewer people/cars
And in ~'85, had first "fast/quick" 500SEL after woeful 380SEL...all in era when wiseguys predicted demise of fast cars, blah-blah
~5yrs ago....
Crude was ~$100/bb; been abt ~$50/bb past 3yrs
Today's new 65s and 911TurboS offer spectacular performance/safety/daily enjoyment on today's (often highly suboptimal) CA roads at a trivial cost vs comparable cars of supposedly great past
Germany, though arguably ~35+% poorer than US, has world's smoothest roads and highest speed/unlimited speed fwys, while spending ~65% less than US per capita on roads
Point is: lots of cycles&obvious absurd asymmetries in life
Suspect in era of >$100K minivans (aka SUVs) or perf cars predominating the most affluent areas of US, S-Class (esp non-65) is largely a limo, w/profits heavily generated in 3rdWorld places like China or NYC/London (and the obvious other 2 engines of profit in auto biz are >$100K minivans and perf cars)
As a repeat buyer of new 65s, I prefer mass scale production/use of S-Class taxi platform (i.e., S560), for faster debugging of chassis&any safety/computer issues of any car daily-driven many miles in 3rdWorld settings like NYC metro's crappy roads vs awful Eastern US weather
I suspect junky eco-engines/gearboxes will come&go given the vastly different buyer bases for >$100K cars: a taxi fleet buyer optimizing costs vs S560 vs a repeat 65 buyer in BevHills who uses a new S65 as a daily commuter car (for a likely <10mi commute on Westside surface sts)....but need scale of taxi S-Classes to quickly debug/iterate 65s (or any MB)

Is it because the US is 25 times the geographical size as Germany?

Hadn't considered it but yes, looking at some numbers, the road network does explain some (but probably not all) of the per capita spending difference. The US has about 4x the population of Germany but about 6x the miles of highway and about 10x the miles total road.

All we need to do is tax ALL the religious institutions and legalize drugs.....there will be plenty of money left over after we get all new roads to start paying off the national debt and outfit our military with all the guns they need.

My Dealer sent me an e-mail on Saturday that the S450 and 450V4 were released for sale on Friday, September 8 and that wholesale activity and shipping commenced that day. It is my understanding that the S560V4 was launched the previous week. My 450 arrived in Baltimore yesterday and the dealer indicated I could expect it early next week.

My 560 arrived in Baltimore yesterday as well ( must be on same ship Honor as Powersb). I'm currently at dealer now. They don't have anything further on when it will be released but we also expect it some time next week. Dealer said they have not received an 18 yet and mine may be the first one they get.

Been a hectic day. Salesman called me today to sign some paperwork, etc and when I drove into dealership saw them unloading a car carrier. Went right over and asked if they delivered a white S class. Not on this truck but another truck came in earlier today and he tells me he thinks an S class was on it. Points to a car further in the lot and by the wheels I know it's not mine. Crap, I say. Go inside and salesman comes up with a smile. It's here. It's here I say. Yup put it out back with the sold cars. Let's go see it. It still has all the factory plastic and cardboard on the interior. The single pane dash all enclosed in plastic so I didn't get a good look at it. Took a couple of quick exterior pics. Will be delivered Tuesday. Will post more photos at that time.

Believe me I wish it was today. It's due to the salesman being busy. He has deliveries today and has Monday off. I have worked with this salesman for 3 cars now and has been great to me so Tuesday can't come fast enough.

Quick note on the video; non-US S-Class which has a slightly different options build than in the US.
US has the sport package which provides AMG-like bumpers (design varies from actual AMG bumpers), side skirts and wheels.
In Europe, this is called AMG line and AMG line Plus, which is much more extensive...
Same bumpers/skirts as in the US but you also get the actual AMG steering wheel, proper AMG front seats and AMG logo carpets.
Also more wheel options are available.

How much it will cost me to add this feature, and is it easy to install an AMG steering wheel?
I guess it's easy because Europe Specs can give you AMG Line Plus while your car is S450
