1999 C140 CL500

Hows it going everyone.

Long time member on the forum. I have been thru 3 W211's in the past 10 years (500, 550 4Matic, E63) and know these cars like the back of my hand. I got rid of my last one 2 months ago.

I'm finally glad to be part of the 140 club. (I know I'm missing 2 doors lol). I originally wanted a S500 sedan but recently picked up a clean 1 owner 1999 CL500 with no accidents and no paintwork.

The car has 130,000 miles and runs very solid for an 18 year old car.

I have replaced the following:
trunk motor (it stopped latching)
passenger door lock
glove compartment kept getting stuck
and a lot of cosmetic things IE: wiper motor aligned, fog lights properly connected, missing emblems and parts... etc.

The few issues I have left is
the car violently shakes when i go from 60-65 and brake from 65-60. I'm pretty sure the tires are shot. So I've found a nice set up 18 inch mono blocks that will look nice on the car (just waiting on the tires to come in this weds)

1) the car sits really low in the rear
2) the partronic doesn't work. I tried listening for the clicks when backing up in the rear and going foward and found that 2/3 of them make that clicking sound. Does the unit just start to work when all of them are working?
3) My car takes about 10 secs to crank and start, and there is a strong fuel smell from the exhaust.

Was wondering if anyone can give me any tips on these 3 issues. And any heads up that I may need to know to make the transition to an 18 year old car smooth.

thanks in advance guys
Fil

UPDATE:

I went to check the fuel pressure regulator on a hint from another 140 owner, and my father found it to be a little loose. So he twisted it into place a little more and what do you know, the car has started every single time of the 10 times I have checked so far. Fingers crossed that was the problem. Fuel smell still exists from the back tho.

UPDATE 2:

The car seems to start from the 1st crank 2 days in a row now. Which leads me to believe the FPR was faulty. I may still change it in the coming weeks as i feel like the diaphragm in the FPR has reached its limit.

As for the Parktronic: it checked all the sensors again 4 in the back and 6 in the front I believe. All of them were making that "clicking sound" except for 1 in the rear.

So I went about to take out the rear bumper. It is held on by 9 screws. Pretty simple after you get the carpet and lining out the way. I took the sensor that wasn't making any noise, and switched places with a neighboring working sensor, (just to confirm its the sensor and not any wiring) and the sensor that worked, did end up working in the previous dead sensors location.

I went to silver star parts department, but the guy said they don't have any of those little sensors in stock or in germany. Can you believe that? He told me to check on ebay, which I'm currently doing. From what I kept reading, 1 faulty sensor can prevent the whole system from working... fingers crossed.

Good luck with your CL 500. Please post a pic. Let us know how that vibration repair goes.

After I changed my old stock 16's for 18 inch mono blocks, the car stopped vibrating. I also changed the brakes and rotors, as the car still vibrated during braking. All the vibrations were gone.

Let me say tho, it was a real PITA, one of the bolts cracked when we were taking off the 16 inch front rim, I had to get it torched out.

As for the parktronic, I ended up switching out the faulty sensor for a new one, and right away the cars system lit up and started working.

The parktronic is very old school lol. I didn't expect it to work on 2 halves of the rear bumper and 2 halves of the front. I was used to one single sensor for the front and one in the back, like in the w211 e class. But I adjusted quickly.

Today I fixed a really annoying issue I had. My drivers side door rattled when I would shut the door or go over bumps. It also had this loud thud when i was braking hard and another one when accelerating... like something was loose.

So I ended up opening the drivers door, behind the sticky firewall pad, and realized that was the rail that was making that noise. It was wobbling off the clamp located on the window.

So we just opened up the clamp on the window regulator. put it on the loose rail, tightened the clamp and voilaa. My door shuts like a tank now, and there is no noise upon hard braking.

Next on my list is to fix the lazy drivers side seat belt.

The seatbelts can be cleaned and the roller lubed with silicone. My car's driver door makes a quick pop if I turn too tight at too low a speed with too much initial throttle tip-in. I'm trying to visualize what was loose on yours. Any pics?

Don't see many 99s, very few post-96 silver ones. Mine is a white 97, V12, 342 made for the US. They made 18 '99 V12s for the US in 99. Not sure how many V8s. Rare either way.

My Parktronic is off. Turn it on and it screams. There is at least one bad sensor but I haven't messed with it yet. If you have part numbers and instructions on what you did, would be great

I presume this car has ADS?

Sounds like one or more of your parking sensors are dead. You need 2 people to check for which one is dead. Go to a quiet area and have one person sit in the car and put it in drive (i believe they should also turn on the parktronic system with the button. Now you go to the front and place you ear on each sensor and listen for a very quiet fast ticking sound like an electro magnetic pulse. if you hear it that sensor is working, if not that the dead sensor. do the same for the rear, except your helper puts it in reverse and turns the system on. (try to keep the system on, mine would shut off after a few). Once you figured out how many you need, you get them from ebay. I got mine from ebay, its probably a Chinese part, so I ordered 2 just in case another broke. Don't forget to color match it.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Parking-Park-Assist-Distance-Control-Sensor-for-Mercedes-Benz/111976197722?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid =p2060353.m2749.l2649

A few things I noticed. there are 2 bolts that connect the bumper to the frame ( i believe there are 8-9) that have this weird lug on them, remember which goes where. The parking sensor pops out of the circle hole, don't make the mistake i did and try to take out the whole metal square bracket. And finally when putting on the bumper. Try to have someone hold it up as much as they can and tighten the bolts. I did it the first time, and the bumper had space in between the body.

As for the sound in the door I will be opening it up again, and updating very soon. Take off that chrome parts of the side of the door top and bottom and look at the top part by where the lock thing that shuts the door is, there is this black flap. You lift that flap and take out this black foam square insert. This gives you a peek into the inside of the door. You should see this separate rail that's banging around ( at least in my case) which maybe the source of your noise.

I also ended up fixing the soft close issue that plagued me after i accidently ripped a wire when putting on the door panel back.

As for ADS? I'm not too sure what that is? Adaptive dampening system? Like the ABC suspension in the newer S classes? How would I check?
