Transmission issue

Started experiencing jerky gear changes so booked in with local MB dealership. They rang saying they noticed a transmission oil leak and advised me that as I had a tranny service done 900 miles ago from a different MB dealership that they are liable for this. So one MB dealership gave the other MB dealership authorisation to diagnose which they did and concluded a leak from the gasket which they amended. This did not cure the problem and the MB dealership revoked the authorisation saying that they will now not cover this. So my local MB have said that they need 4hrs labour on top of the 2hrs they have spent on the car to diagnosis the problem and then stated I'm looking at needing a new transmission which we all know are not cheap and I have to pay for the work that the other MB first aouthorised then revoked. It seems they have already made their mind that I need a new transmission without even looking into it. I'm looking at close to a £1000 just to diagnose. I feel like taking it to a tranny specialist. symptoms point to the torque converter as the tech said the trans fluid was black and with the jerky shifting. The car has done 40,000 miles I just don't feel that it has to be a full transmission replacement. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated during this stressful time

It's hard to say with just hearing but if the fluid is black after just hanging it it's something burning up most likely a clutche, the torque converter or a bearing most likely caused by the fluid leaking..
If the other shop changed it and didn't install the gasket properly causing the leak I would definitely make a call to Mercedes and let them know the situation
Hopefully you get it remedied quickly and back to driving 👍

Will ring mercedes on Monday. It's already been out of commission for nearly 2 weeks and I can't see this getting resolved anytime soon. Just out of sheer frustration I prob would pay for the repairs of a torque converter or other components but the cost of a new transmission given the stats of the car feels hard. but I don't even trust my local MB iv heard all sorts of horror stories they were already pushing a new transmission on me without even properly diagnosing it. Thanks for the advice

Mercedes doesn't typically rebuild trans, they just order a new one. Bring to a trans shop with 722.9 experience.

I spoke to a trans specialist he said he could build the trans for half the price mercedes would charge. As comforting as that is to know I really believe this issue can be resolved by a proper diagnosis and simpler repair. Cause I'm a new face and I don't have the connections I just feel that the specialist is pushing me into work which is more profitable to him and the fact that when something happens to my pride and joy I panic doesn't help. I am a very honest and true being I just want that kind of service in return without getting ripped off.

I am assuming your car is out of factory warranty and you have no extended warranty from MB or a third parth in which case I with those who are suggesting a really good independent transmission shop familiar with these transmissions to diagnose this.
The fact that the oil is black after 900 miles makes me nervouse the original change was done using the wrong oil or they did not make sure the TC was properly included in the service.
The other option is a used trans from a salvage yard.

As well as the trans service I had the stars teat done on the transmission which came back all good. Would you say I have a case against MB because if the service they carried out leading to this. Also what kind of labour hours should I expect if I choose to get used trans. Iv been told only MB can pair the trans to the car via coding?

I am sure an experienced trans shop has work arounds but you will have to ask a lawyer about a case. You have to figure cost to persue vs. what you are out to recover.

Thanks everyone for the advice it was my first ever thread and it's helped ease some stress. I'm going to take it to a trans specialist to properly diagnose and if it can't be reapaired I think it will be the best option to get a used trans and go to Mb specialist to fit it in. Will keep you all informed just want the beast back on the road asap. Thanks again

Just to have a head start in case the specialist tries pushing me to have him build a new one. What are the symptoms pushing towards what might be wrong. Experiencing jerky shifting going up in gears coming down is not really that noticeable. When I'm stationary and turn from comfort to sport the car jerks harshly. Mb tech has said oil is also black. I want to seem a bit knowledgable before I go in. Any advice is appreciated

see, my 722.9 couldnt be fixed, but thats likely due to the transfer case. Idk, couldn't find anyone who could fix so had to get a new one. Good luck

Left car with specialist over weekend. He looked at the car and said the transmission cooler has failed which lead to a leak. My question is do I recondition the transmission or look to purchase one from a salvage yard. What would you guys reccomend
