Cool New 2024 GLC300 At Dealer 3 Days for Annoyances

Thursday, May 2, 2024

GREETINGS ALL! This is just a "VENTING" post. Not expecting any responses. (But if you know anything helpful, your reply will be appreciated.)

Took delivery on 2024 GLC300 SUV with 12 miles on it, in mid-April. It has been in the shop (at the dealer) now for 3 days, with the following "annoyances" being diagnosed and repaired...hopefully.

1. Downshifting while coasting to a stop is harsh...from 15mph down to 0mph. The dealer couldn't resolve it during a 4 hour "test and try things" session last week. So it's back now for a multi-day effort. WHILE THERE...

2. Brakes feel "spongy". When at a stoplight, it feels like the pedal is almost to the floor....like the pads are almost worn out. More pressure is needed to stop my GLC300 than my wife's larger 2022 GLE350.

3. Driver door handle creaks and squeaks when opening/closing or laying my left leg on the handle while driving. Mechanic told my service contact person today to let me know via text message that, "All the GLC300 door handles make those noises." I responded to her with, "He is Wrong...the 2024 GLC300 Loaner I'm driving does NOT have a creaky/squeaking driver's door handle."

4. The "L" in the GLC300 at the rear of the car is loose. I thought they'd just glue it, but an entire "GLC300" badge had to be ordered.

5. The "Mercedes Me" app installed in the car says "Screen Mirroring" of my Smartphone is an installed feature. But I can't find HOW to do it. Either in this forum, or by searching online, or in the GLC300 manual. Would be GREAT if we could, because "Android Auto" only allows apps approved by (?) to be mirrored on the big GLC300 center screen. Being in transportation, I use Amazon and Roadie apps while driving. Can't add them to the screen via Android Auto, but "Mirroring" the phone to the GLC300 (like to Televisions) would be great.

Well, that's the end of my little vent session. Thanks to MBWorld.org for allowing me to do so!

j/k! I don't know of any Mercedes that allows "Screen Mirroring". Can you take a screenshot that implies this is possible from your car?

Refer #5 If you search screen mirroring in the manual, it doesn’t exist. I use a iPhone but my photos should be similar for android. On page #312 of the manual you’ll fine MBUX and info related to what’s on the screen. On my iphone I have 25 apps that can be added or moved around on the screen. No additional apps can be added. Technically I don’t think there is a real good reason why you couldn’t show a particular app on the screen that you have on your phone. So for my phone I find CarPlay. I Open it and the customize area shows all the apps. Although the last photo says more apps. It’s greyed out and there are no more apps. I know android phones are more flexible than Apple so there good be a way to open more apps but that’s above my pay grade.

Below is a photo I took of the screen, before dropping the car off at the dealer last week. (They still have it, 4 days later.)

Photo of the in-vehicle Mercedes Me app, showing smartphone Screen Mirroring being available. Supposedly available on all 2024 GLC300 SUVs.

2024 GLC-300 & 2022 GLE-350
Monday, May 6, 2024

Today was DAY #6 at the dealer. They say it MAY be ready for me to pick up tomorrow. Of the listed "annoyances", here is where they stand at this time, according to my Mercedes service contact person.

1. To fix the loose "L", the dealer ordered a new GLC300 "badge" for the back of the car. It arrived today.

2. NO FIX is available for the squeaking/creaking driver-side door handle. The technicians say all the GLC300 door handles squeak and creek. (My GLC300 loaner doesn't make those noises when I open/close the door, or drive with my left leg laying against it.) When I get the car back, I'll put a few drops of Oil where the plastic meets the metal on the door handle. That's where the squeaks/creeks originate.

3. Spongy Brakes were on the schedule to be looked at today.

4. Jagged/Jerky coasting from 15mph to a stop: The technician said his "adaptation fix" didn't work during the first 2 attempts. He's waiting for guidance from Mercedes Benz, and will take it from there. Not sure what all this means, but it sounds strange for an Engine/Transmission that's been widely used on thousands of GLC300's over the past 2 model years, to need basic "adaptations" applied.

There may be a ray of hope for #4. Recently, there was a recall on my MY23 GLS450 that addressed the transmission (this is just 1 of 2 recalls so far for me in my less than 1 year old car). My guess is that a recall may be forthcoming for the GLC as well!

That "FIX" could have been what was implemented on my GLC300 today. The technician drove the car 52 miles on various roads, coming back to the dealer 3 or 4 times, over a 3 hour period earlier today. The contact person sent me a text saying that a new "adaptation" was received from Mercedes Benz headquarters, and was being installed. After a 3 hour "cool down", the car was driven again for 3 miles, and slowed to a stop without any jerkiness, according to my dealer service contact. (It was interesting watching all of the technician's activity and maneuvering today from home, on my Mercedes Me cellphone app.)

Anyway, I'm picking up the car tomorrow. I'll post an updated report after driving a few miles. Thanks for letting me know that a transmission-related recall may be headed downstream for all (most?) newer 9-gear Mercedes vehicles. I'll ask tomorrow if what they did to fix mine is something that will be widely applied.

I noticed the transmission in my GLC is very "jerky" and erratic. Hope they have a fix for it soon.

The "fix" for the jerky slow-down from 15mph to 0mph was accomplished by the technician resetting the transmission learning software to it's factory delivered state, and then driving the car around various streets and conditions to make it "learn" how to deaccelerate smoothly. It took him several tries over a four day time frame of resetting and driving...resetting and driving...to make it finally learn (the process is called "adaptation") how to slow to a stop smoothly, in all modes....with the "A" off/on.... in "E" (economy) mode...in "C" (comfort) mode and in "S" (sport) mode.

There is obviously a "bug" that affects some number of 2024 (and 2023?) GLC300 vehicles. I had one with this problem and maybe you do to. Heck...maybe most of them have the jerky slowdown, but drivers don't care?

Since you obviously DO CARE, just as I did, I suggest you take your car to the dealer and have them train the transmission properly, like they did for me. My 2024 GLC300 now has 958 miles on it and slows down buttery smooth in all driving modes...Except for the first 5 minutes of morning driving...the warm-up process. GOOD LUCK!

Problem #1 THE FIX: The "fix" for the jerky slow-down from 15mph to 0mph was accomplished by the technician resetting the transmission learning software to it's factory delivered state, and then driving the car around various streets and conditions to make it "learn" how to deaccelerate smoothly.

Problem #2 Turned out to be NORMAL behavior: The Mercedes technician says the brakes feel spongy sometimes when stopping and stopped at a red light, or from 5mph down to a dead stop, because of how the semi-hybrid charging system works. I notice after driving the car more, that it's only about 3 out of every 10 times of coming to a stoplight/stopsign, that the brake pedal seems to be going close to the floor. It's a big change from what I'm used to, but i'll adapt.

Problem #3 Was fixed by tightening everything in the door handle and doing something to where the plastic meets the metal. It no longer squeaks or creeks when squeezing it, or laying my left knee against it while driving. (They initially told me, "All GLC300's have that issue." I told them, "That's not correct, because the loaner GLC300 I'm driving has a rock solid driver door handle...no creaks or squeaks. Please make my door handle high quality, like the one on this loaner.")

Problem #4 was resolved by replacing the existing GLC300 badge on the rear of the car with a new GLC300 badge (I think). Every letter/number is now 100% non-movable. (They left some glue on my tail light lens, but I'll figure out how to SAFELY remove it.)

"Problem" #5 was left unresolved. The technician and customer contact specialist said I needed to talk to the person who understands every aspect of operating a Mercedes Benz's hardware/software. He can tell me how to mirror my phone's screen to the big middle screen of the GLC300. I'll talk to him in a couple of weeks, when my wife gets Service "B" performed on her GLE350.

Total number of days at the dealer was 7. The fixing of the "jerky" slowdown was the most time consuming, because the engine/trans had to be "cold", for each memory wipe and training attempt.

@AllenChicago Thanks for putting this summary together! I’m picking up my GLC 300 coupe today and it’s great to know firstly that these issues have answers, and secondly some things to keep an eye out for. I know there was a bit of pain on your part getting to this point so thanks.

I applaud you for fighting for your rights! German over-engineering strikes again (though BMW seems to have backed off somewhat in this regard to their benefit)!

Sadly, quality control doesn't only impact the lower tier cars for Mercedes...

Thank you for getting all these answers!
Just picked my GLC a few days ago, the jerky feel at low speed is very irritating too!
