Good evening, My 2011 E350 Coupe has a clicking noise coming from the left front wheel when I am turning right; I am not sure if it bearing, strut or spring.
If anyone every have this issue, or if someone with knowledge of front suspension could enlighten me as to what could be the cause I would very grateful.
On my 2015 E400 Cab, both my front bearings blew out at speed. First the right side, then the left side a few months later. Never heard any sounds as I was driving at highway speeds both times.
I heard a boom and then a puff of smoke from the wheel well. The bearings are internal (ISTR most manufactures use this design now) so, you can't just replace the bearings. This happened after the warranty had expired, but MB covered the second repair.
Clicking may indeed be an early warning signal for bearing failure, so you need to be proactive and get it diagnosed and resolved asap. Jack up the left front until the wheel is off the ground. Grab the wheel/tire assembly by the top and bottom and check if there's any play. Do the same check for lateral movement. If there is play, your wheel bearings are probably failing.
pl626; interesting about the bearings. I looked up mine online and it seems it uses the old school bearings.
I looked up yours and it's different for the AWD vs 2WD, with 2WD being old school. So I guess you have AWD?
The weird AWD on top, my old school on bottom:
They still look removable so I don't get it. Maybe just too difficult to remove in the driveway?
Oic, not sure why I assumed awd. Interesting vid. I see mfg cost cutting with song n dance about how it's better for the customer
I should probably grease mine, but I know I'll blow it off.
Good evening, I haven't had a chance to do a check as recommended; however, I will definitely check tomorrow. thank you for your input everyone.
I recently had a creaking noise in the front when parking and it was the bushings, I think, that had cracked and were completely dry. Fairly cheap repair.
Good morning, I just check for the wheel bearing, and I did have movement horizontal, but no lateral movement. I am going to order a set of bearings for the front.
wait before bearings.
If movement in one direction could be suspension bushings.
so it rocked side to side but not up and down?
IF bearing goes out it will rock in any direction like the wheel bolts are lose also when you spin tire it may make noise or feel "GRITTY"
Need to get car on lift and check things out or possibly waste money on bearings.
On a MY2011, fresh bearings aren't really a waste, unless they were replaced recently, but you're right about the omni-directional play. If there was no lateral movement, it's probably some other suspension or steering component.
Good evening, I replace the struct mount bearing and the issue was resolved. I had a difficult compressing the spring for installation by eventually got it w/the help of my nephew. Also change out the sway bay link.
