Holy crap….about 60 minutes ago we just got back from a 4 hour drive. At 50 minutes my wife noticed smoke outside and was hoping it was mist. I run outside and it’s smoking and I see flames underneath by the back engines area. I run and get two fire extinguisher but was unable to put out. My wife calls the fire department and we got our two dogs out of the house and went into the woods.
We heard multiple explosions and huge flames. No major explosions and no one injured.
Fuel leak, possibly PCV leak. Front of hood seems to have been exposed to high heat for longer than the rear of the hood. Both tires are intact. The fire was extinguished in a relatively short time.
So the sequence of events that transpired. We live in Volcano Hawaii which is not super hot but the last two days we took four hour drives back to back to the Kona side.
We went inside and about ten minutes later I look out and said is the car smoking? We thought maybe it was just the mist hitting the heat of the hood but went outside and there was smoke barreling out from under the hood. We called 911 and Tor got the fire extinguisher and tried to spray it but there were flames shooting out from under the car. We finally aborted and got the puppies and ran to the back yard to wait for the fire department. The flames were over the trees and it kept exploding. It was awful, we were so worried it was going to catch the house on fire or like fully explode. The police got there and couldn’t put it out and then finally the fire department got here and extinguished it.
I just started backing the car in the carport which if I did not my motorcycle and lawn tractor is on the other side.

don't worry - the e53 has a mild hybrid system right with that kooky 48v super success of theirs ... Greta may take comfort in that at least?? There's only one volcano god I answer to...

Damn, couldn't imagine standing outside hearing the car explode while wondering if it will burn the house down before the FD arrived to your remote location. Hope it's a quick path back to cruising to Kona in style.
I get it...years ago I had a Jaguar XJS (V12) catch fire in the garage.....we had an MG Midget catch fire....once poured about a gallon of hydrochloric acid accidentally into the floorboard of a Ford Escort LX....had a buddies NOS take explode in the driveway when someone accidentally drilled a hole in it right by the end.....
Even still Bluebook is only so much and already paid down about 45k.
I hope Mercedes helps out knowing there are issues…what do you all think?
I think it's worth talking to a highly regarded legal professional about the whole situation and determine if and who will be doing the evaluation of the carcass to determine what may have happened.
