2019 E53 Coupe
Exclamation 2019 E53 AMG Coupe FIRE

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to make you guys aware of an event that happed on Sept 1, and perhaps see if something similar has happened to anyone else.

On November 26, 2018, I became a proud owner of a 2019 E53 AMG Coupe. Up until that point, I basically had owned almost every other german luxury brand. The E53 was exactly what I was looking for. It could be a comfortable GT car, and with a flip of a switch, it becomes an amazing sports car. The fit and finish is unmatched by any other brand, except perhaps Porsche.

I loved the car. I never took it to the track, and I didn't perform any mods.

On Sept 1, I parked the car in my work's parking garage at 9:45 AM. At about 1 pm, incoming staff started sharing a snapchat of a car on fire in the employee lot. I couldn't see clearly, but it was in the vicinity of where I typically park my car. I walked over with keys in hand with thoughts of potentially moving it.

To my surprise, the car on fire was my 2019 E53 AMG coupe. Unfortunately, the fire also took out my partner's Boxster GTS next to whom i parked.

Surveillance footage shows no one coming near the car and smoke/fire starting up at about 12:45 PM, about 3 hours after I parked it.

Mercedes Benz USA put me touch with an Executive Referral Manager. It has been two weeks. I have been quite disappointed and disgusted with the attitude and approach of MB USA. Perhaps events like this happen too often, but I feel that this could be a great safety issue. They have not communicated any true sense of concern and absolutely no urgency to find out what happened.

The car spontaneously caught fire 3 hours after parking it. I thank god every day this didn't happen when it was parked in the garage under my kid's bedroom.

Overall, if you're considering one of the new MB cars with this new "mild hybrid" engine, I would urge you to reconsider for at least a production year or two.

If you think that Mercedes Benz USA will support you, the customer, in any way during this process, think again. I have not been offered a loaner or have been offered any sort of assurance that they will stand by their product.

Wow, thats pretty crazy. Glad to hear no one was hurt during the blaze. It might be a little premature to conclude that the 'mild hybrid' engine was the cause of the fire, but if it is, I do hope they issue a recall to fix whatever the problem is.

OP, thank you for sharing. Surprising however it on fire seeing as how "watered down" the AMG brand has become. You are better off anyways without the posh w213. Get yourself a W212 E63S.

That...is awful especially considering your comment if this happened in your garage. I remember seeing some months back on YouTube an E53 similarly destroyed by fire, but do not recall the story behind it.

Perhaps you should be talking with your insurance company. They are the ones I would expect compensation and loaner cars from. Pending investigation of what happened, I wouldn't immediately blame MB, or rule out their responsibility either. Sad to say, but in today's world, the cause of this could be a wide range of things, from defective product to incendiary device...and yes, very lucky that it didn't happen at your home.

Very true. The insurance company, who absolutely has financial responsibility, will or should be looking to MB for some reimbursement. Better them than you.

Agree with others, shouldn't you be talking to your insurance company? They'll go after MBUSA on your behalf.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
Sorry to hear this. Yes I do remember someone posting here a while back that their E53 caught on fire too. Thats one reason I got the E450. I was seriously thinking about the E53, but then thought of it being a stiffer suspension and all the complexity of the hybrid system and decided to go with the the E450 Cabrio and Wagon. As a replacement maybe you should consider the E450 although it sounds like maybe you are permanently soured on MB at this point.

Yep, I remember reading about the other incident too. Still shocking to see what's happened here.

One other possibility: Were there any devices (computer?) with lithium-ion batteries in the trunk? It looks like there was an explosion in that area.

FlyersPhan: You were quick to call out MB as the bad guy in this scenario, but now are strangely silent. Any developments that you would care to share?

I noticed the trunk looking as though it was torn open due to an explosion...high possibility that it was an electrical short.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. I live 15 minutes away from Lankenau, and I did not realize that this happened so recently in our area until this post. I hope that everything works out in the end. That is rather scary.

Sorry to hear, glad you are OK.
Did you happen to get any check engine lights regarding your 48v battery malfunctioning prior to this incident?
