1017 G63 oil filter housing replacement
This past weekend I attempted to replace the oil filter housing on my 2017 G63, which has the same leaking small plunger on the filter housing. I removed multiple components to create enough working space.
When I started removing the T40 Torx bolts on the oil filter housing, I ran into a problem with the bolt located on the bottom driver-side of the housing (I believe it’s the longer bolt). The picture above shows the new oil filter housing, and I marked the location of the bolt that failed during removal.
My T40 bit would not fit properly, so I tried using a T30 on a 3/8 wrench. At first it seemed to grab, but it eventually slipped and the bolt head was slightly rounded or damaged. I tried a few other methods to remove it but had no success.
Since I needed the car for daily use, I ended up reinstalling everything and only completed an engine oil change and coolant replacement.
My plan is to try this repair again during the next oil change. I’m thinking about using a small hacksaw or a Dremel tool to cut a straight slot into the bolt head, then removing it with a large flathead screwdriver.
If anyone has suggestions or better techniques for removing this partially stripped bolt, I would really appreciate the advice.
I also have another question. When I removed the skid plate, two zigzag-shaped spring clips above fell out and I’m not sure where they were originally installed. I reinstalled the skid plate without them for now.
My guess is that these clips help reduce vibration or oscillation between the skid plate and the chassis, but I’m not certain and don’t know where and how to reinstall them back.
Does anyone know the correct location for these zigzag spring clips or how they should be installed on the skid plate?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
