Replace new with disposable pigtail extension.
Disconnect batteries then check ECU connectors for engine oil - Reset fault codes.
Check VVT Solenoids if you care to.

disconnect or not...
I would power down the chassis or every ECU partners are going to miss it across CAN-bus.
You can try without disconnecting batteries, scan afterwards to see what pans out....
Many CAN Modules are powered 24x7 in low power mode, not powerless.
This is how ECU faults sensors disconnected regardless it was off.
