visiting from the audiworld - thinking about a sl600 for a summer toy

what things should I look for when evaluating one. What are the specs on the car? suspension? Is it active or can coil over be put on it. How does it handle? is it nose heavy? Does it understeer a bunch whne pushed? Whhat mods can be done to it to improve horsepower, handling, ergonomics or just other fun stuff. I currently drive an A8 as a daily driver and tend to track it a few times a year, any thoughts on how the SL would do in such and event. How is the transmission? what are the problem areas with these cars.

Have you done any investigation yourself? For the 600 there is no bad spots. However, if you are unhappy, it will ruin you.

thanks for the reply. I am just begining to look into things but i have been having a hard time finding info on the SL600. If you know of any sites that I can access it would be greatly appreciated. so far what I have looked at it prices of the cars and parts. they both seem pretty reasonable.

Depends where you are from and if you can read german or swedish. I have lots of stuff in my download area and much more that I hav´t scanned yet. There is also some stuff in english. Just click on my logotype. However, you must be a member to download.

You must joke, or you have too much money. But if you had money you should look for a 300 SL, from 1956 :p

I talked with my guy from who i buy parts for the A8 and the comperable parts for the SL were cheaper or maybe 10% more than for the A8. I do most of my own wrenching and what i can not do, one of my patients does for me. So I never really have labor cost only parts costs. It looks like I can get a 95 or 96 for about 22k US and if I can keep maintenace cost below 3K per year I would be happy. I tend to drive around 60K per year so far I have been putting them on the Audi. What kind of longevity can one expect from these cars. Are they capable of putting 200-300K miles on them.

It is big engines in the car and it is not exactly stressed doing 1700 rpm in 60 mph, so I presume that you have more miles in a 600 than in a regular car. It all depends on the drivers driving
