I suspect that the oil bridge plugs have blown away, they are located under the valve covers, it is common to your engine.

The SL is for top down motoring and trips away, it's the most practical and comfortable of the three by a mile. Ferrari is for day trips out and back where there's no worry where I'm going to leave it - excursions into Wales, for example.

I'm pretty much retired now, so lots of time...
blue,

have you looked into paintless dent removal techniques such as dry ice? this works well on dimple dents. you simply obtain a small amount of dry ice (small, but large enough to use two hands - be sure to wear some well inulated gloves) and you simply massage the dent and the metal around the depression in a circular motion.

the metal shrinks and, voila! - dent removed and paint intact!

500SL oil pressure problem

My '92 50SL (61,000 miles) has an scary problem- after short drive and engine at operating temp, oil pressure drops to ZERO at idle. When being driven, pressure is OK at 1.5-3.0 bars. I've been told that maybe oil pressure relief valve is defective. My local M-B dealership is a den of theives and trips to their service department typically results in invoices north of $1000, so I'm reluctant to revisit there. I have more than average mechanical ability and have often done my own service and repair work with satisfactory results (on older models), but a little aprehensive to dig into this sophisiticated engine. First of all- how do I locate the relief valve and is any speciaized equipment necessary to replace it?

is it fine if something the oil pressure will go down to 0.5 or even 0 when stopped at a light? it doesnt go down to 0.5 or 0 often but it does happen, once the engine is warm. Normally it is at about 1.0-1.5

1992 500SL
As a follow-up to my recent post about low oil pressure at idle in my '92 500SL- the car has always been properly maintained including 3000 mile oil change intervals. Engine does not use oil nor does it smoke. Operating temp is typically just above 80C and idle RPM is ca. 650. With only 61,000 miles it's unlikely that there is significant engine wear. I have had many suggestions about this problem including "use 15W50 oil", "don't worry as long as oil pressure is OK at driving speed", "this condition is not unusual", "add STP or Motor Honey to the crankcase", etc. Nevertheless, this low oil pressure only began to occur about 1000 miles ago (last year) and prior to that was always above 1.5 bar at idle and so I'm concered there's something wrong. I did find that the oil pressure relief valve is located in the oil pump housing inside the oil pan. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm nervous about driving the car with this condition. If in fact it's necessary to replace the valve are special tools or test equipment required?

If anyone needs metal oil tubes (bridges) to replace their blown factory plastic ones in their M119, I've got a couple sets available. Pulled them from a couple different 400E/500SE wreckers.
