question about the rooflines

Hey guys,

I am thinking of getting a R129 off of a family friend for a pretty good deal...I've been a member of the mercedes family for a long time, with C classes and S classes but never a SL, so i'm not very familiar with it.

Do all the SL500s come in convertible? and if they are all convertible, do you get BOTH the hardtop and the soft top, or do you just pick one or the other?

If i'm driving with the top down, will the roof automatically close up with a button? but then I would have to manually close the top if i'm using the hardtop right?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Gary

All 500SL/SL500s are convertible, however, for the earlier models, I think the hardtop was an option. The softtop is permanent while the hardtop is detachable.

As for the hardtop, that is a fixed object. You can either remove it or put it on the car. This item does not fold into the car like the newer models.

To close the softtop, it is all powered. The car must be in P (I think) to operate it.

all of the 129s are convs.

the 129s come with the hard top

the roof and many other things run off of a hydrolic pump that is very reliable. you must be going less than 2.5 mph to close the top, nad there are no "latches" or any thing to close, it all auto

the hard top does not "drop" but the canvas top does.

hope this helps!!!

Are you sure you can close the soft top while t he car is in motion? I thought you have to either put the car in "P" or have the brake on before you can close the soft top.
