SL/R129: no start 98 SL500. dealer said....

no start 98 SL500. dealer said....
so my dads 98 sl 500 (65K miles) that i, my wife, and mom drive a lot has been not starting. two weeks ago it ran fine then all the gauges quit. The car went into limp mode so i turned it off. Afterwards it would turn the motor over but not fire. Sounded like it was out of gas. Dealer said it was the fuel injector modulator (SP?) that was around $1,300. Anyway do to my past problems ($18K in warranty reapirs on a 02 G500 and still having problems, along with 3 new ecu's in a 00 CLK 430 that turned out to be a wireing problem) im starting to wondering about this dealership which is the closest one in 200 miles.
My questions are this:
1) Is it possiable to score this on Ebay or from a salvage yard. The dealer said it was vin number only related and would not let the car start.
2) Does this problem sound normal or has anyone had this problem before.
3) Is there any other test to run to make sure this is the problem. I mean i dont want my dad to hand over $1300 for a computer and it turn out not to be the problem. The car has low miles but is out of warranty, At 1300 a pop things could get very expensive in a hurry.
