2002 Silver Arrow
Head Unit and Chip for 2002 SL
Hi,
I just purchased a 2002 Silver Arrow and would like to upgrade the radio to something with more features, to include navigation – would that be sacrilegious? If not any suggestions?
I would also like to add a performance chip -- does such a thing exist?
Thx in advance.

and you could do a pully system from evosport.
and for the radio, you would have to do some major mod. to your int. to have that work.

I added a retractable DVD player to my 1997 SL500 and it fit in the same slot as the old one without any modifications. The only thing extra I had to buy was an adapter for the ohm difference between the Bose audio system and the aftermarket unit.
I will tell you now though, you need to find a shop that has worked on Mercs extensivley in the past and preferably SLs. A lot of audio shops will tell you all kinds of crazy stuff. i.e. you have to change out all of the speakers and amplifier, etc.
I went through all of that when I was doing mine. You would not believe some of the stuff I was told and they make it sound like they really know what they are talking about using technical terms, etc. I finally went to my local MB and got them to recommend someone.

I changed mine about a year ago, so I'm a little sketchy on all the prices. I got the radio (Pioneer AVH P6500) on ebay for something like $650.00. The adapter was about $100.00. The installation was somewhere around $100.00.
So that you can see how it fits in the car, here's a pic of the radio with the screen closed.

The unit does stick out a little, but they all seem to due to the screen feature I guess. It does fit all the way in flush like it is supposed to.
You're just used to looking at your car. The wheels look great on your car. Just as good as on mine I think. Something tells me that we won't be the last ones with those wheels.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a performance chip.
Second, in regard to the radio unit, just install it yourself. I put a panasonic head unit in mine and it was a sinch. Buy the harness, so you don't have to cut up wires, and buy the antenna adapter and both those won't run more than 50 bucks. The harness is easy to connect as the wires are, for the most part, color coded.
If you are intent on installing an in dash unit like dallas, the only other thing you would have to do more is find a spot to stash the "brain".
