Engine blips

The engine of my 1996 SL320 has started to miss or blip when stopped in gear. It doesn't happen when under power. I have noticed that the fuel pump is a little noisy, and think it might possibly be the the culpert. Any thoughts?

all fuel pumps have a humming sound- and you WILL hear them. Check filters first. Also, check main engine wiring harness for insulation cracking. Lastly, check throtttle body - make sure it's clean as well. If you start changing parts just because you "think" it's the problem- you WILL spend alot of money with no visible results to brag about.

I had it in to the dealer for two days. They can't find anything wrong, but I'm not sure they checked either the throttle body or the wiring harness. Hopefully I can look at this over the weekend. Another mechanic said it could be the throttle position sensor, or the mass air flow sensor. I would think these two things would have shown up on the computer readout at the dealership. I wonder if it could be water in the gas. When the tank gets low I will add some HEET when I add fuel.

a2aa: What year is your 280CE? Mine is a 1978 with 91k. My wife says I need to sell it because it rarely gets driven, except to the German Car Show.

it's a 1978 model- silver with blue interior. It's in a coma right now- needs an engine rebuild. body and interior in excellent condition. How about yours? I'm contimplating weather to sell it for parts or restore it.... My father says ..RESTORE!!!

Are you thinking about selling yours?

I'm thinking about selling. It is a metallic medium brown color, not dark or light, almost has some red in the color. Interior is almost like new: parchment seats and trim, and floormat, black dash. I put it in Star magazine in the early summer, but put too high a price and got no response. My son drove it in a road rallye last month here in KC. I have thought about restoration also.

restore

seems like you need very little restoration, if any. Just keep up with small thing s that go bad ie: moldings, wear on upholstery, busted bulbs, etc. The most drastic restoration wil be a new paint job. Don't settle for cheap over spray. Anyway, goodluck with the project. Not too many good examples of the w123 coupe gas around. Good luck.
