SL/R129: Fresh Pics
Wheels are AMG replica's in silver and polished rims..
8x18 front with 1" lorinser spacers and 235/40's BFG's
9x18 rear with 1" lorinser spacers and 265/35's BFG's
The car squats and the arches are full as all SL's should be.
I agree the top should be down, but I just put it up and it's a pain in the neck
to remove it and store,it'l have to wait till April I'm afraid...
Here are the few mods I gave my SL to give her that edge over more modern cars:
It still sits on the original body kit:i.e:1993
1-Rear lights changed to 1995-98 model...No amber signals.
2-front clear blinkers
3-front DTM spliters under spoiler with SS adjusters
4-rear floating wing...fiberglass..It helps when you're going over 200KMH..
5-Cancelled the middle silencer and fitted a full stainless Lorinser system
cat back and adjustable side to side and in height..It sounds like a sports car now..
6-Superchip replaced the existing one.
7-K&N sports filter
Approx BHP now 270...for a 300 24V...
Can run with 500's now but still returns 25 mpg..
8-Rear reverse sensors
9-Alarm with total closure..windows and roof...with microwave for when leaving top open..
10-Chrome speedo rings..chrome gear surround..chrome/wood momo lever.
11-Lorinser wood/leather steering with center chrome merc.logo
12-Racing Stainless/rubber pedals with resting pedal.
13-all center console in wood including under arm rest..Sl 600 style ..
14-chrome air vents.
15-Pioneer in dash head with DVD and retractable screen..6600..
16-Boot:4 channel lanzar amp and 500W lanzar sub..
I am sorry to bore you with all the details but I thought it would be nice to
know what each and everyone of us does to his car..
My next step is brakes and springs for extra handling at high speed...
Any suggestions??
You have done an outstanding job of keeping your baby in great shape. The mods are VERY impressive. Plus, you've been really really helpful on the board.
The wheels look great.
The paint looks great.
You can call me an idiot if you want, but what are "front spliters"?
Also, do you really need that rear spoiler?
I suppose if you put arms on the Venus de milo, she could have a hand shaped like a cup holder, and it would be functional, but . . .

Splitters are under spoiler trays on the front corners of the car.
They not only look good, but as in DTM races they have a function as well.
They keep the front of the car pulled down at high speed and chanel air to the tires and brakes..I'll post close ups soon..
As for the rear wing..call me an eccentric..I haven't seen one on an SL before
bar one in Bahrain that had one of those OTT twin blade adjustable jobs..
But it also has a job of creating downforce at the rear..
Since I am fortunate enough to live in a country where speed limit is not enforced,I drive regularly at 200/220 KMH[freeway only]...125/140 MPH..and these things make a hell of a difference..I guess you guys have not experienced these speeds in your SL's,and that is why you do not need all these additional gizmos.
Plus it is fun to do something different instead of going the usual way of just upgrading to a post 98 body kit...
Don't forget.the R129 can be a sports car also...remember the Silver Arrows
of 1996....
So sorry,I am a sucker for long speeches,,

I think that 90% of SL drivers are stuck in down town traffic. Or due to inexperience or aptitude ... have no idea of what their R129 machines are capable of doing.
What is significant about R129 Silver Arrows from 1996?

I had in London:
1-Porsche 911 3.2 carrera 1989
2-Lancia Thema 8.32 1990..the one with the Ferrari engine:3.0 V8 32Valve
and the electric rear spoiler.
3-Ducati 916 1996..
All these vehicles are fast but were never used as intended to be..might as well drive a ford fiesta in Europe..That's as far as you're allowed to go..
And I guess it's the same stateside..specially California, where my sis lives by the way...
So,back to Lebanon where funilly enough,we don't see many accidents..we can indulge in a bit of driving and release tension...safely,of course..
I have done the UK police instructor course and numerous racing courses from
single seaters to saloon car racing...That helps in driving safely at high speed..
By the way,the silver arrow racers in 1996 were a couple of Mercs..an R129
SL and a W124 coupe in silver that raced around tracks in Germany..similar to DTM races of today..they looked impressive..you might pics of them on the internet..racing side by side....
So basically, the SL can be made to race and handle......
This is where the car was intended to be when it was built...and the acceleration from 90 is effortless till 125mph...If you're lucky enough to have an open stretch ,you will reach 150mph in no time....
I think ,in a way that's why my car..a 1993..is so reliable..It is used well!!!!

When I mentioned that to the service attendant, he said something like "The SL was designed and built to be driven hard and fast. For Auto Bahn cruising. The car runs best when driven that way."
My car runs just fine
!
