Leather Conditioner

Does anyone know of a good leather conditioning product which will actually improve and restore the look of the MB leather (in other words, not leave the leather slippery and overly glossy)?

I love Griot's garage conditioner, but it does leave a strong leather shop smell like new boots, a baseball glove, or a new leather jacket. Of course I like that new leather smell, albeit not necessarily a new car leather smell but a new leather smell nonetheless. Best applied in the sun on a hot day using the blue sponge applicator thing you can also buy from their site and let it set all day undisturbed for maximum absorption. Wipe off the excess after it has had a chance to soak in. Doesn't leave it any shinier than it originally was. If your leather is older, apply it every couple weeks for 5 applications and it will return to like new feel and texture. After that, every few months works good to keep it that way. I think its www dot griotsgarage dot com

Before you make any decision do yourself a favor and visit the Detailing & Automotive Care forum. You will get some real advise. To get there, click on MB forums and scroll down to the detailing forum. Good luck. Later, JOE

You can't beat a steam cleaner for cleaning and adding moisture to leather, i use one on my cars and it is truly fantastic.... much better than a gloopy cream that you have to wipe off. If you can buy one there, get a Polti.... it will make your day. Honestly.

b4mmy,

Which model of the Polti do you have or recommend?
It seems to me that steam would cause the leather to dry out rather than moisten it. Is there any drying out in long term use? Thanks for the advice.
We looked up Polti on the net and it looks great for cleaning carpets, stoves and windows. Now my wife wants one.

Herb

Hi Herb

It won't dry your leather out because it leaves moisture on the surface of your leather... it doesn't 'cook' the surface if that's what you are concerned about. It works two ways, by forcing moisture into the surface with high 'dry' steam pressure, and the heat of the steam cleans up brilliantly...

You'll find that the surface is left wet, rather than dry. You have to use terry cloth on the attachment so you aren't applying the steam direct.... don't use the attachment that you use to clean the stove with or you'll definitely ruin your leather!

The model I bought is the Vaporetto 2300 and its fantastic and its great for cleaning the house as well... which is the real reason I bought it!

Now if only I knew this much about how a V8 works....
