It's for when you put a baby/car seat in. It keeps the seat belt tensioner in one place after the seat belt is activated. So, you know you have it on the wrong setting if your passenger cannot move around after his or her seat belt is on.

Oh, to answer you other question about disabling the air bag. According to MBZ, the only way to do it is to use a BabySmart compatible child seat.
See the owners manual. I have an electronic copy I can private mail you if you like. It is for 2001 SL 500 and 600. OR you can go to MBUSA and joing the users online section and download your own. Unfortunatly, it is protected and I can't email only a section of it. Hmmm . . . maybe I could print up the relevent pages, scan them back unto the computer and send them to you. Just let me know. You should probably have the whol owners manual. It's around pages 57 and 58.

Too bad shortturtle294.
From the year over year changes link:
1998 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class: Mercedes-Benz dropped the six-cylinder SL320, leaving only V8 and V12 models. Those added Brake Assist and a new Baby Smart feature that could recognize the presence of a child seat.
