SL/R129: Tranny fluid level

Tranny fluid level
checked the transmission fluid for the first time tonight (i know thats not good practice)
ran the car till it hit 80*C and checked the level and it was quite a bit higher than the max mark on the dipstick and i hope that i am just checking it wrong
also whenever i read about tranny dipstick on the r129, i hear that there is a clip that needs to be snapped off and a special dipstick used. my car has a strange dipstick that kinda flip locks into place
anybody have any helpful info?
