proper oil for the 119 engine
Lets hear the pros and cons about using synthetic oil in the 119 engine. Will it really help or hurt ???????????????????

My Mercedes guy says use synthetic
Just had my oil changed by a mechanic who worked for the local Mercedes Dealer here for 13 years. He recommended synthetic oil for my '92 500 SL. As an aside, he also recommended a fuel injection cleaner called BG 44K. He said it was one of the few products as good as it claimed and one of the only ones he continued to use after leaving the Benz dealership. I had previously put a bottle of Lucas Injection Cleaner in, which cleared the rough idle I had (from the car sitting for 2 months) so I haven't tried it yet. It looks like quite a few new car dealers carry/use it.

Sunthetic oil is usally not used in older engines.
If the car is less than 5 years old, then it's OK to use it,but in 13/14 year old cars,it is really of no use anymore....
Mercedes and BMW recommend using 10W40 semisynt..for older engines..
but the service intervals must be 5000 miles to keep your engine in tiptop condition...
The bottom line is if you're using synthetic in old engines, you're waisting your money and not getting any real benefit from the whole thing...
I use Wintershal[german] recommended for use in Mercs and BMW's....

Why would the age of the engine matter?
I'm curious about this. My understanding of the benefits of synthetics is that they don't break down as fast as conventional oil. Why would that benefit be lost on an older engine?

Synthetic oils are OK for engines with low mileage as engines are still fresh
and pistons and rings still tight as well as gaskets.
Older engines need heavier oils that lubricate better than fully synthetic..
fully synthetic oils last longer ,that's it....
