My 92 SL500 stock radio is cutting out the woofers while the mid and high remain going, it gets worse with volume and is OK at very low volumes. I suspect there is an amp for the woofers. Where is it, how can I check it? Any input is appreciated.
I should also note that sometimes the radio station has a very strange type of static then clears up, separate problem?

I have a '92. If you have the Becker Grand Prix cassette player the woofers are powered by a tuner/amplifier located in the trunk behind the carpet on the drivers side fender well. The other speakers are powered by an amplifier in the passenger side footwell, which is why the woofers can cut out while the others dont. The fact that you are also getting occasional static would be consistent with the tuner/amp malfunctioning. In fact, the "radio" in the dashboard is just a control head. I just figured all this out when trying to determine how to connect an Alpine CD player/receiver. I finaly decided there was no easy way to do it without rewiring all the speakers and running a new antenna lead from the trunk to the dash. Just sent the thing back to Crutchfield (whose technical support was useless), and bought a Toshiba MP3 player to play through the stock radio instead.
