95 good year.
the 500's are very strong, it does depend on how hard you drive it. but other then preformance mods that i have done, and driving my car to hell and back. nothing has gone sour (exept for the radiator) (tranny went because hard hard driving)
thas it!

MBWorld Fanatic!
We all LOVE our R129s. And there is a reason for that.
The SL is a "Flagship" model of engineering prowess. One of the finest cars ever produced.
You really do have to drive one (and don't be gentle) to appreciate it. Top down preferably.
You will not regret the decision to buy a R129.
Here is some info on year over year changes:
http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/u...x.cfm/id/2462/
There are some preferences amongst the R129 owners.
Some like 1997 to 1998 for improved transmission & strong 4 valve per cylender the engine.
Some (me) like 1999 on for improved styling and 3 valve per cylender engine.
I think the SL600 offers great power.
But ... I would have to say that the model has been strong since inception in about 1991. The motor and drive train are concidered to be bullit proof!
Go for it. You only live once!

let me put a little more input into this.
i have a 124 E500 too. its a blast to drive, the breaks, the power curve is awsome and it feels awsome. BUT, at the end of the weekend, im always very very happy to step into my SL. the solididdy (like that spelling
) and the essence of the 129 is unmatchable. my first car was a 94 E420, i had it for several months. and i must say, the SL is soooo much more of a nicer car than the 124, and im not just saying that, i have owned both 124 and 129. and i ended up with BOTH in my colection. they are great. i would drive the SL on the weekends if i had an E320/420 but because of the E500 and its rairity, i decided to have that be the occation car, and keep the miles low. if i had to keep just one, it would be the SL. you can't match it.
