A Service - Seperating Pulley

When doing the A service, MB technicians discovered a vibration from the engine.

They investigated and found the "Seperating Pulley on the Crankshaft" inner sleeve (absorber?) to be 80% out of it's normal position. They referred to it as pulling apart. It apparantly could have failed any time ... the service rep and mechanic were saying we would not have been happy campers if that had broke.

My wife just now pointed to me what the item was. It seems to keep the main radiator fan belt going on the right path.

I imagine that if it failed the belt would have gotten twisted / broke & gone flying.

A car guy I talked to today said those flying parts would have punctuired the radiator, hood damage , engine damage etc.

Any one know exactly what happens with that item failing?

It was covered under our 3 year extended Power Train Warantee.

Gotta love those MB technicians. They are very thorough.
