Gas Leak and Self Leveling Shocks Needed.

Hi Guys-

I backed my '97 SL600 out of the garage today and noticed a small gas leak.

It is in the center of the car just in front of the rear wheels

I believe that it is pressure related (maybe a hose/clamp).

It only leaks when the car is on.

When I shut the car off, the leak stops.

What should I look into when I jack the car up.

I haven't jacked it up because of the leak.

I also have trouble jacking it up because the PO removed the self leveling shocks and pressure equalizer and the car is much lower.

Where should I go for these parts?

The M-B dealers quoted me 5-7K to do the job.

What would the approximate cost be for me to do it (for the parts) and how big of a job is it?

It looks like I'll need the four shocks, the equalizer, possibly the hydraulic pump, and a few of the hydraulic lines.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Vincent

Hey Mark -

Yup, it seemed like a lot to me too.

The quote included the 4 shocks, pump, and equalizer.

That's without labor.

The pump was $1200, equalizer was $460 and $2200 for the shocks.

They also recomended another 2K for whatever else might be needed, could need a set of accumulators, definately need some hydraulc fluid lines ( two lines were actually cut, maybe even some sensors.

This quote was for a MB, Saab, Toyota Dealer.

I stopped at an independant mechanic and they wanted $1700 for each front shock and $700 for each rear.

That's all I needed to hear, they wanted a fortune too.

If I need all of these items what do you a think the MB Shops would charge?

I really would like to support this great site - just can't find a link to do it.

Best,

Vincent
