I asked this on another forum and got no response so I will try here. My car has no backlighting for the 3 center dash vent thumbwheels, is it supposed to? Where is the bulb and how do I change it? It's a 97 SL320 Spoet.

Is it from behind the dash? If it is, then it might be a tricky job to remove and replace. Call up MB, see what their cost is. If that's too ridiculous, then find an independent MB Mechanic.

 

There are small bulbs inside the vent unit. You'll need to remove the unit, and it takes about 10 minutes.

First thing is to remove the storage compartment immediately above the control unit. Then pry-off the bezel that snaps in place over the thumbwheels of the unit -- this exposes 2 or 3 screws. Remove the screws and pull the control unit out.

Dan, someone on the other forum corrected me. You don't need to remove the control unit to replace just the 2 bulbs for the thumbwheels...Just remove the bezel.

 

I think you need to insert the key in the lock and a little pointy thing in the hole beside the lock, then you remove it. I did have a vid on this once, if you have trouble with it PM me.
